Here is the Week 4 roundup of games for Savannah area schools.
BRUNSWICK 52, NEW HAMPSTEAD 24
BRUNSWICK — A highly anticipated matchup between two up-and-comers from the coast didn’t go the way the Phoenix had hoped.
Class 4A No. 10 New Hampstead (3-0) was ranked in the AJC poll for the first time in program history. Class 6A No. 8 Brunswick (2-0) had not started a season with consecutive wins since 2012. The Pirates are 3-0 for the first time this millennium — they started 3-0 in 1999 en route to the state finals that season.
Brunswick (3-0) led 31-16 at the halftime break behind two rushing touchdowns from Chuckobe Hill and the Pirates kept their foot on the pedal in the second half, finishing with seven rushing touchdowns as a team. NHHS cut the deficit to 14 points with six minutes remaining but never got closer.
Hill finished with three rushing touchdowns, giving him five on the season.
NHHS quarterback Pauly Seeley was 8-for-18 passing in the first half and senior Phoenix receiver Toriano Bias caught his fifth touchdown of the year.
Seeley finished 14-of-37 with 237 passing yards, according to Dennis Knight of The Savannah Morning News. Bias tallied seven catches for 107 yards and the score.
BENEDICTINE 48, NORTH OCONEE 17
The No. 4 ranked team in Class 4A coming into this week, Benedictine (1-2) led 14-10 at halftime over the visiting Titans (1-3). From there, the Cadets dominated behind Justin Thomas’ three touchdown performance and three more (two rushing) from quarterback Holden Geriner.
After scoring three TD’s last week, Thomas did it again this week. He caught a second half TD on a trick-play where receiver Kam Edge threw him a 58 yard scoring toss. He ran 92 yards on a fourth quarter TD gallop.
Geriner’s two rushing scores were from one and five-yards out. Senior linebacker Holden Sapp had an interception for the Cadets.
CALVARY DAY 28, NORTH COBB CHRISTIAN 0
KENNESAW — Class A-Private No. 3 Calvary led 14-0 at halftime against No. 10 North Cobb Christian and Mark Stroud’s team led 28-0 through three. The Cavs are 4-0 with two wins over ranked teams already this season.
Jake Merklinger’s 67-yard third quarter TD toss to AJ Butts was the final of four Calvary touchdowns.
NCC (2-2) was victorious over the Cavs last year at Calvary, but since that setback, Calvary has not lost a game at home.
JOHN MILLEDGE ACADEMY 40, SAVANNAH CHRISTIAN 7
MILLEDGEVILLE — The Raiders trailed 40-0 at halftime against one of the best teams in the state of Georgia. The GISA (3A) state champion in 2019 and 2020, JMA (3-0) has now won 27 straight games.
SCPS (1-2) had four turnovers in the first half.
JOHNSON 14, JENKINS 8
An intriguing non-region matchup between two Savannah public school foes facing off at Islands Stadium was tightly contested from start to finish. The score was tied, 8-8 at halftime and it stayed that way through three quarters.
Johnson (1-3) jumped out to an 8-0 advantage before HVJ (1-2) tied things up early in the second quarter. SCJ took the lead in the fourth on a 28-yard passing score from Keon Edwards to Ted Hurst and the Atom Smashers defense held on late to win.
SCJ’s Anthony Cooper had an interception for the second straight week.
ISLANDS 35, SAVANNAH HIGH 0
At Pooler Stadium, the Sharks (2-1) won their second straight game while the Blue Jackets (1-2) suffered their second straight loss.
HILTON HEAD PREP 14, ST. ANDREW’S 0
SAA (1-1) held its own against the visitors from Hilton Head. HHP (3-0) is ranked No. 6 in SCISA, according to the MaxPreps computer rankings.
