Tyler Helmly has had some big shoes to fill at Memorial Day School, taking on the dual roles of Athletic Director and Head Football Coach. He has assembled a new coaching staff and together; they have been working with their team since June.
Having a small school means small numbers. Dressing just 19 players, the Matadors will be outnumbered in just about every game they play, but with the attitude of not being outworked, they will surprise many of their opponents.
The Matadors kicked off their season Friday night traveling to defending GAPPS State Champions Griffin Christian. The excitement of their first game settled down as soon as the players tore open their Cheerleaders run thru with senior running back Cam Hall taking it to the house.
Sophomore Quarterback Sean Stoddard scored on a keeper early in the 2nd Quarter, making it 14-0. Scoring in the 2nd quarter was Amare Drew and Tyler Jackson and the Matadors went to the locker room with a 27-0 half time lead.
The 3rd quarter scoring was by Cam Hall and DaNiah Brewer and a 4th quarter TD by Cam Hall (his 3rd of the night) ended the game and Coach Helmly’s long awaited first game victory 45-6. Hall led all rushers with 8 carries for 156 yards (19.5 avg), scoring three different ways, one rushing, one on a Kick-Off return and a punt return. Josh Carpenter kicked three extra points.
The Matadors (Road Warriors) will travel to Louisville, Georgia this Friday night to take on GISA Class “A” Defending State Champs Thomas Jefferson Academy coach by Benedictine grad Terrance Hennessey.
