Memorial boys baskeball claim wins over Pinewood

Memorial's varisty boys basketball won a tough road game at Pinewood on January 9, bringing a 78-65 vicotry back to Savannah.

Memorial's George White led the way with 26 points and 8 rebounds while DA Brewer had 17 points and 12 rebounds. Both played significant roles in the come from behind win for the Matadors in Bellville.

Pinewood's Eli Belding scored 23 points, and Nick Scott conributed 22 points for the Patriots.

"(PindwoodI is a AAA School in the Georgia Indpendent School Association and Memorial Day is a AAA school in the GISA, so any win at Pinewood is a good win," said Memorial coach Todd O'Neal. "This game no exception." 

The Matadors came our cold and trailed 23-15 after the first quarter, but Memorial's full court press put the Patriots on their heels. Memorial's Sean Stoddard also added 14 points, and Amari Drew came off the bench to score 10 points and grab 5 rebounds. 

"Drew was the key, becasue we put him at the top of our 3-2 zone and he was able to cause a lot of disruption," O'Neal said. "He also is an extremely gifted athlete that can get up off the floor and was able to give us a few opportunities on the offensive end with that athleticism. Although we did not play well, we will take the win and be grateful that we were able to get it.” 

Memorial is now 9-2 for the season while Pinewood dropped to 4-4.

JUNIOR VARSITY

Memorial's junior varsity boys went on the road and captured a 49-26 victory over the Pinwood junior varsity boys on January 9.

The Matadors came out flat and only scored 5 points in the first quarter, but they were able to play stifling defense and hold the Patriots to 4 points. While the offense for the Matadors picked up for the next three quarters the defense did not let up.  

Freshman Amari Drew led the way with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Jake Venditti added 11 points while Comari Jones scored scored 10.

"We are working hard and believe we will be region champions again when this season ends," said Memorial coach Todd O'Neal, who said his junior varsity team's only losses have come against larger schools, Calvary and Savannah Country Day. "That says something about this young group. They have a tremendous amount of grit, and I love their competitive drive.”
