Savannah, GA. - Memorial Day School’s Athletic Director, Tyler Helmly, has announced the hiring of Javares Taylor as the Head Coach of the Matador’s varsity football team.

Taylor will succeed Helmly as he steps down to allow himself more time to devote to the other athletic programs at the school.  While not serving as Head Coach, Helmly has assured his players that he will be on the field assisting Taylor as needed.

Taylor attended Jenkins High School and following graduation played at Savannah State University.  Taylor also played in the Arena Football League with the Tennessee Vipers, Alabama Hammers, Savannah Steam and others. He has been an active coach for several years assisting at Jenkins High, Islands High and Windsor Forest.  He is the owner of “Amp’d Up Recreational Sports League”, offering various team activities for teens and adults to get active.

“We are excited to have Coach Taylor join our family at Memorial.  He is well respected in the community by parents and players alike.” said Helmly.  “Javares was on our campus many times last season during football and basketball getting to know our returning players.  They spoke highly of him and are excited to see him lead our football program.”

Helmly will continue as Head Baseball Coach for the Matadors while working towards continuing his efforts to build his Volleyball, Basketball, Track, Golf, and Tennis programs.  “Basically – if our student-athletes are willing to work towards building a program, I am more than happy to help make it happen for them”, Helmly added.
