Savannah Christian led 59-57 with seconds remaining and a chance to ice the game at the free-throw line with a 1-and-1 opportunity to win the rivalry game against Savannah Country Day and Christian’s Eckburg Arena on Friday, January 22.

The first free-throw missed, and SCDS secured the rebound and outlet passed to senior Eric Brown. Brown heaved a halfcourt shot as the buzzer sounded and it ricocheted off the backboard, off the rim, and off the backboard again before eventually missing.

SCPS won by that score, 59-57, and the victory over the rival Hornets was monumental for head coach Robert Walsh’s team. The Raiders (9-7 overall) are tied with the Hornets (10-7 overall) atop the Region 3-A Private standings as each is 3-1 in league play.

Thomas Davidson led SCPS with 14 points and Charles Moore added 12. Cooper George tallied 11 and Parker All 9. For the Hornets, Brown poured in 22 points while Gray Grayson and Rob Spaulding added 10 apiece.

Christian led 34-30 at halftime and 48-45 through three. SCDS won every quarter except the first, falling behind 17-11 after the first stanza. The two teams have split the season series, after SCDS won in a similar score the first time around, 59-51. Each has two region games remaining headed into the final weeks of GHSA regular season play.

“We wanted to kill their record,” Williams told ESPN Coastal’s Kevin Thomas after the game of Woodville’s previously perfect record against Savannah teams.

The Wolverines can get revenge right away, as they play Class 4A No. 4 Johnson Saturday afternoon.
