This past weekend, November 19-21, the Georgia Independent Schools Association held the 2020 Clay Target Sport Championship at the Forest City Gun Club in Savannah, Georgia.

The Benedictine Cadets Clay Sport Team captured the 2020 GISA Clay Target Sport Championship. Overall, Cadet shooters shot 100 rounds each of sporting, skeet, and trap over the course of three days. Their first event of the tournament was sporting clays.

The Cadets got off to a good start, with Jackson Schaaf leading the way with a 91/100 on a very tough sporting course. Jake Kinlaw (88/100) and Pete Hodge (87/100) brought in solid scores as well, and the scores were rounded out by JoJo Foran and Walker Brooks, setting the team up in a good position going into the trap on Day 2.

There was a steady wind for trap, but nothing our Cadets couldn’t push through. Kinlaw and Foran led the way on the trap scores with 91/100 and 92/100, respectively, setting the Cadets up for Day 3, which was skeet. BC was in a great position for the win going into skeet, but with some scores still outstanding from other teams, the Cadets needed five solid skeet scores to solidify the win.

Benedictine’s top five Cadets showed up, with Walker Brooks bringing in his personal best when it mattered the most! The combined total from Kinlaw (96/100), Foran (96/100), Schaaf (95/100), Hodge (97/100), and Brooks (97/100) took the championship with a lead of 14 clays over second-place Savannah Country Day. Kinlaw’s combined score (275/300) took the High Overall Award (HOA), making this the third year a Cadet has won Individual HOA State! Schaaf placed HOA for his sporting clays score with Kinlaw and Hodge in second and third, respectively.

It was great to see three Cadets on the podium at 1,2,3. Foran, Kinlaw, and Schaaf also made the 2020 All-State Team (top 10 highest overall combined scores). Freshman Charlie Moody had a great showing, and his combined score put him just behind the Cadet top five. There were impressive showings from all of the Cadets in the three different disciplines, with many earning letters. This is the end of the season for BC’s sport shooting team; however, many of our boys will compete in SCTP with the Forest City Juniors after the first of the year and through the end of the summer. Practices and tryouts for next season start the first of August 2021.
