Players of the Week Spotlight: Chapman and Mincey Earn It the Right Way
Some players don’t wait for the spotlight. They earn it by doing what their team needs — especially when things get tough. They are Kailyn Chapman of South Effingham and Layla Mincey of Bryan County, who showed exactly what that looks like.
Kailyn Chapman | South Effingham High School
Junior | Point Guard
With South Effingham’s star guard sidelined, the team needed someone to step up. Kailyn Chapman responded effectively to this challenge.
The junior point guard during the week of December 15th helped guide the Mustangs to a 12–3 record in the first half of the season, averaging 16 points per game while also taking on more responsibility as the team’s leader. Over the last three games, she filled the stat sheet and came up big against county rival Effingham County, scoring 22 points in a key win.
South Effingham head coach Alexus Parker said Chapman’s growth has been about more than points.
“She deserves Player of the Week because of her leadership as a point guard with our star guard being out,” Parker said. “She has stepped up and contributed in other areas outside of scoring and has taken control of being the voice for the younger girls. She’s being the example for our freshman point guard and truly stepping into her full potential.”
That’s what good point guards do — they lead, talk, and make everyone better.
Layla Mincey | Bryan County High School
Sophomore | Forwar
In Bryan County, Layla Mincey has shown she’s not afraid of big moments.
The sophomore forward turned in a huge week of December 15 with a performance against No. 6-ranked Screven County, scoring 23 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. She followed that with another strong outing against Wheeler County, posting 16 points and 14 rebounds. Her steady play inside has helped Bryan County jump out to a 12–1 start.
Bryan County head coach Mario Mincey said Mincey has embraced a bigger role.
“Layla is only a sophomore, but she’s had to step her game up,” Mincey said. “By doing that, it’s helped our team get off to a 12–1 start.”
That’s a young player doing big things — rebounding, finishing, and competing every possession.
