When the game was on the line, Shelby Zeigler delivered not once, not twice, but three times. The Effingham County senior stepped up with big-time plays at the plate and in the field to help the Rebels win their second-round playoff series against Seckinger High School. Her clutch performance earned her the title of John Carr Real Estate/Prep Sports Report Softball Player of the Week.
Zeigler got the Rebels started early. In the first inning, she laid down a perfect squeeze bunt that helped Effingham County take an early lead after trailing 2-0.
But her biggest moment came later. With the game tied 5–5 in the bottom of the sixth, Zeigler stepped up and hit a two-run line drive double to left field, giving the Rebels the lead, 6-5.
In the final inning, she finished the job on defense. Playing third base, she caught a hard line drive and quickly tagged the runner at third, ending the game with a clutch game-winning double play.
“She’s a big-time player who made big-time plays,” said Effingham County softball head coach Brad Thompson. The Rebels now move on in the GHSA Class 5A state playoffs with momentum and confidence. Next, Effingham County (27-7) will face Creekview (25-5) on October 29, 2025, in Columbus, Georgia.
