The start of a new basketball season means every team is undefeated, optimistic and aspiring to be its best.
Some teams also have a clean slate in terms of new head coaches, such as Bob Martin, who has nine years of experience as a head coach and is in his first season at Calvary Day. Blaine Loveless, as another example, already was coaching at Savannah Classical Academy and now is at the helm of the boys team.
Dancial Jackson, a former standout player and later a longtime assistant at Windsor Forest (two stints for a total of eight seasons), now leads the program at his alma mater.
Savannah native Bakari Bryant, who won state titles as a player at Savannah High and as the head coach at Jenkins, has returned to his hometown to coach New Hampstead and rise again with the Phoenix.
Here’s a team-by-team preview for the Greater Savannah area:

ROBERT W. GROVES HIGH SCHOOL
Coach: Kevin Evans
Years as head coach at school: Sixth year
REGION: CLASS 3A-REGION 3
Overall and region record in 2024-25 season: 4-19, 3-10 Region 3-3A
Key returning players: Jamel Flaggs, G, sr., 5-9; David Harmon, W, sr., 6-2; Kaleb Detty, F, sr., 6-4; Kavalee Godboldte, G, jr., 6-0; Kyje Davis, G, 6-0.
Key losses: Tyrone Chisholm, G, 5-8 (region offensive player of the year); Marcus Thomas, G, 6-0; Cameron Jenkins, G, 6-0; Hezekiah Manning, F, 6-3; Josiah Manning, G, 5-10.
Key additions: Deontrey Barnes, F, sr., 6-3; Shaun Ellison, G, jr., 5-9; Fernando Rodriguez, W/F, 6-5.
Season outlook: Defense will be key to our success. We aren't really big, but we aren't small as well. We have some fast guys, we have some long wings. We want games to be sloppy and low scoring. We want to limit our opponents to one possession and limit them to taking less free throws than we make a game. If we can keep teams under 50 (total points), we will be in great shape. Holding teams under 40, I believe, will win us a lot of games.
Offensively, we are guard-heavy and have a lot of guys who can create for themselves and others. Unlike in the past, I believe we have some guys that can hit the outside shot and stretch the defense. If our guards come ready to play every night, I see us being hard to stop. – Kevin Evans

Coach: Jacob Inness
Years as head coach at school: Third year
REGION: CLASS 3A-REGION 3
Overall and region record in 2024-25 season: 7-19, 1-12 Region 3-3A
Key returning players: DJ Hills, PG, sr., 5-8; Junior Mike Cooler, C, jr., 6-7; Jordan Walls, SF, so., 6-7.
Key additions: Andrew Harrison, PG, so.; Josh South, W, jr.
Season outlook: We return 13 of 14 players from last year’s very young varsity team. We have a lot of height and length this season with three players 6-7 or taller. This gives us a huge amount of versatility on defense and an advantage on the boards. Last year, we were very young and inexperienced; this season we expect to compete for a top-four spot in the region with a goal to earn a playoff spot at the end of the year. The keys for a successful season are to take care of the basketball and win the rebounding battle each night. We must embrace playing with toughness and physicality on every single possession against a very competitive and difficult region schedule. – Jacob Inness

SAVANNAH CHRISTIAN PREPARATORY SCHOOL
Coach: Zach Darling
Years as head coach at school: Fourth year
Region: CLASS A-DI REGION 3
Overall and region record in 2024-25 season: 13-13, 5-6 Region 3-A, Division 1
Key returning players: Ty Byrd, PF, sr., 6-5 (team captain, first-team all-region last season); Cam Yeldell, G/SF, jr., 6-2; Aden Johnson, G/SF, jr., 6-0; Ethan Schmucker, PG/W, so., 6-2.
Key loss: Dalton Bunch, PG, 6-0.
Key additions: Aidan Darling, G, fr., 6-2; Andrew Goodman, F, jr., 6-1.
Season outlook: We return some key players that will allow us to compete and continue to build on the foundation laid in the last couple years. We will be a team which is disciplined and really gets after it on the defensive end; playing unselfish basketball, sharing the ball and flourishing in our system.
(Keys to a successful season are) I think really continuing to be one of the teams which leads in holding opponents well below their average PPG. Playing team ball on the offensive end and establishing Ty Byrd in the post will lead to success. Utilizing the slashing ability of Aden Johnson and Cam Yeldell. Relying on Ethan Schmucker and Aidan Darling shooting ability from behind the arc. Incorporating Andrew Goodman’s blue-collar mentality with the hustle and strong aggressive defense. – Zach Darling

Season outlook: Our outlook for the 2025–26 season is simple -- we’ve got to get back to playing team basketball on both ends of the floor. That’s the foundation of who we are and who we need to be again. Defensively, it’s got to be five guys versus the basketball every possession. We have to be connected -- talking, rotating, contesting every shot and then finishing the play by securing the rebound. Defense is where our identity starts. If we can be the tougher, more-disciplined team on that end, we’ll give ourselves a chance every single night.
On offense, we want to play with pace. We’re going to push the ball in transition, move it side to side, and make the extra pass -- not just settle for a good shot, but work until we get a great shot for our team. When we share the ball and play unselfishly, that’s when we’re at our best.
We know we’ll have to overcome some inexperience and we don’t have great size, but we can make up for that with effort, toughness and execution. If we defend relentlessly, rebound with purpose and take care of the basketball, we’ll be in position to win some games.
Our goal is steady growth -- to be a better basketball team in February than we are in November. If we stay committed to that process every day, keep buying into our system, and keep playing for each other, we’ll like where we end up when it matters most. – Travis Priddy
