Savannah Football Standout Chaz Sutton Giving Back to the Next Generation

Savannah football fans remember the name, Chaz Sutton.

The former HV Jenkins and South Carolina standout is returning home to teach the game the right way during a three-day Nike Football Skills Camp in Savannah.

From Friday nights at Jenkins High School to the SEC at the University of South Carolina and eventually the Tennessee Titans, Sutton became one of the top football players to come out of Savannah in recent years.

Now he’s bringing that football knowledge back home.

Sutton will host a three-day Nike Football Skills Camp June 8-10 at Calvary Day School, giving young athletes from across the Coastal Empire a chance to learn the game from former college and professional players.

And according to Sutton as heard on the Savannah Sports Report on May 20, 2026 Youtube Vlog, this camp is about much more than running drills.

“When I grew up, I had coaches and people in the community pouring into me,” Sutton said during an appearance on the Savannah Sports Report. “Now it’s my turn to give back.”

The camp is open to boys and girls ages 8-13 and will focus heavily on teaching fundamentals, technique, and confidence in a safe, non-contact environment.

Sutton said too many young athletes today skip over the basics while chasing social media highlights and flashy training videos.

“You’ve got to do the little things right before you can make the big plays,” Sutton said. “That’s what the best players always did.”

The non-contact camp will focus on footwork, speed, agility, attitude, effort, and football IQ. Campers will also go through combine-style testing and position evaluations before working with coaches on position-specific instruction.

Unlike many one-day summer camps, Sutton said this event will give coaches time to actually teach the game over three days.

“We want kids to walk away learning something,” Sutton said. “Not just run drill after drill.”

Camp organizers say athletes will learn from coaches with experience ranging from Power 5 college football to the NFL. Players will also be grouped by age and ability level during instruction.

Several former college and professional players are expected to help coach during the camp, including Irvin Riley, Anthony Lanier, and D'Angelo Brown. All three are former Savannah football standouts to name a few.

Sutton said one of the biggest parts of the camp will be the coaches sharing their personal journeys with young athletes.

“I didn’t have the best grades coming out of high school,” Sutton admitted. “I had to fight through adversity to get my opportunity.”

Another message Sutton stressed was not limiting athletes to one sport too early.

“Don’t ever limit yourself,” Sutton said. “A lot of the best athletes played multiple sports.”

Sutton also talked about today’s NIL world and warned parents to be careful when dealing with agents and contracts.

“Get somebody trustworthy to look over those contracts,” Sutton said. “Find people that truly have your best interest.”

The former Jenkins star said the long-term goal is to make the camp free through community sponsorship.

“We want to make this something special for Savannah,” Sutton said.

The camp will run Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Calvary Day School, located at 4625 Waters Ave. in Savannah. Check-in begins 30 minutes before camp starts each morning. Campers are encouraged to bring their own lunch and snacks.

The camp currently has a limit of 150 athletes.
