2022 QB PREVIEWS: Running with Luke Kromenhoek, Benedictine

The Prep Sports Report previews the 2022 high school football season for Savannah area teams by taking a look at some of the top quarterbacks coming to a field near you this fall. All stats are courtesy of MaxPreps unless otherwise noted and there is no specific ranking in order of posting of quarterbacks.

Benedictine’s rising junior quarterback isn’t concerned with racking up high school stats. But there is one stat in particular which means a great deal to Luke Kromenhoek. For him, it’s the only one that matters.

“I’m not really worried about my stats to be honest. I just want to win a lot of football games and lose very few of them,” he said from Gainesville, Florida during a June 23 phone call with PSR.

“That’s what matters most to me … the wins and the losses.”

For those fond of winning, Benedictine is a nice place to be. The Cadets (13-2 in 2021) won the Georgia High School Association’s Class 4A state championship last year behind a historic offense led by current Auburn freshman Holden Geriner. Head coach Danny Britt’s team reached the Class 4A semifinals the year prior and Geriner’s three-year run as the BC QB was a massive success by any measure.

The similarities between Kromenhoek and Geriner are hard to ignore. Each began receiving high level college scholarship offers prior to ever starting a game at quarterback on the high school level. Both of them played sparingly as freshman behind senior quarterbacks, both of them played with an older brother on the team, both bring with them high expectations and state championship aspirations.

Benedictine fans are hoping they’ll have state titles in common someday soon.

“He made his mark at Benedictine and put his stamp on the program,” Kromenhoek, who played a key role as a freshman receiver last season, said of his predecessor. “I learned a lot from playing with Holden and from watching him. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to become the kind of leader he was for us moving forward.”

Kromenhoek’s recruitment won’t slow down once he begins his tenure as the Cadet quarterback, but he is already verbally committed to Florida State for the class of 2024. So even as he talked from a weekend camp on the campus of the University of Florida in late June, he says his commitment to the school which offered him his first Division I scholarship is firm.

“I’m fully committed to being a Florida State Seminole,” said Kromenhoek when asked for any summer updates on his recruitment. “My commitment is solid.”

The Cadets return one of the best receivers in the state this season, as rising senior Za’Quan Bryan (a Minnesota commit) should be Kromenhoek’s primary weapon this fall. Bryan hauled in 95 catches for 1,395 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior All-State selection.

BC opens its season on August 19 against Jenkins before heading to Miami to play the backend of a home-and-home with Florida’s largest private school, Columbus.
