The Georgia High School Association announced high school football will happen, but games will kick off two weeks later. The official practice start date remains July 27
The GHSA Board of Trustees meet Monday afternoon at the GHSA office in Thomaston. The meeting focused on how to handle players who test positive, the 2020 - 2021 athletic calendar, and what will take place with the rest of fall sports, cheerleading, cross-country, softball, and volleyball. Listed below are the first dates for these sports can compete against other schools.
- Softball: August 6
- Cheerleading: August 8
- Volleyball & Cross-country: August 10
- Football: August 21 - moved to Sept. 4
GHSA Board Trustee Jesse Crews motioned to stay with the current GHSA calendar, and an 8-4 vote defeated the motion. Then more discussion took place which led let to a motion by board member Glenn White with the current outcome to move just the football season back two weeks, which passed with a 12-0 vote.
GHSA board member Steven Croft made this statement. Craft said, “We’re committed to having a full regular season and playoffs. GHSA executive director Robin Hines and his staff will figure out the logistics of the playoffs. My experience is that if you’re playing for a state championship, you’ll show up anywhere, any day, any time.” All sports summer conditioning with follow all coronavirus protocols and will remain the same.
