The Groves High School football team is gearing up for their game against West Laurens High School and the season under the guidance of Head Coach Calvin Wells, who is feeling upbeat about his Rebels' chances. The team's strength lies in a group of 17 seniors with a mix of 12 returning players and five new faces, all aiming to exceed performances. Three of these players are the first to be recognized as part of this group, leading the team to success. Throughout the season, Groves plans to spotlight one senior weekly after starting with these three seniors set to make an impact this year.
Mikel Brown - Slot Receiver
Mika Brown will be used in various positions but mainly as a slot receiver despite his height of 5'9". He's one of the most versatile kids we have," said Coach Wells. "Even with his height, he's a matchup issue, and I'm confident he'll do some big things this year." Brown's speed and ability to adapt on the field make him a player to watch, especially in the upcoming game against West Laurens, according to Wells.
Micah Calhoun - Linebacker/Defensive End
Micah Calhoun, another senior who transferred to Groves from Bethesda two years ago, has swiftly established himself as a player on the team. Standing tall at 6'2", Calhoun primarily plays as a linebacker and defensive end. "He led the team in tackles year, and I anticipate he will do the same this year, " Wells remarked. "His presence, on the line, poses a challenge during third and long situations." Wells also highlighted Calhoun's size and his knack for disrupting the opponent's offense as factors for the team's success.
Rashawn Moore - Running Back
Coach Wells referred to him as "the sleeper" on the team and emphasized that he will have a significant role this season as one of the bigger backs on the team. "He is expected to handle 40 to 50% of ball carrying duties " Wells said. "When he has possession of the ball and is focused I am confident we will make progress with him on the field." Wells views Moores's responsibility as the ball carrier during second downs as crucial to executing the team's offensive strategy.
Coach Wells expressed optimism about Groves High School's prospects this season with a lineup that includes these three key players. "We have a wealth of experience," noted Wells. "These individuals have dedicated themselves. I am eager to witness their performance. "As the year goes on, these seniors will need to set an example both during games and in school as Groves High School works towards improving and making an impact in its region.
