Thanks to its two brightest stars, New Hampstead opened Region 3-4A play on Tuesday night, Jan. 5 with a 76-71 upset win at home versus a short-handed, No. 9-ranked Jenkins Warriors team.

The Phoenix (5-2, 1-0 Region 3-4A) got 23 points from Alaris Wall and 22 from DeAndre Smart to knock off the preseason favorite to win the four-team region (NHHS, HVJ, BC, IHS). Jenkins was without senior guard Amonte Rivers and sophomore guard Juwuan Boggs for unknown reasons.

HVJ (6-5, 0-1) head coach Terry Hines watched his club close a 10-point halftime deficit to even up the game in the second half before eventually beginning the foul-game with just under two minutes to play.

Jenkins was led by Charles Williams’ 20 points, Jerrell Floyd’s 11 and Jerod Finney 10.

It was the second straight victory for New Hampstead over HVJ, and Jenkins hasn’t beaten NHHS since 2016.
