After 80 years, one of the best parts of the Savannah Quarterback Club’s Monday night meetings remains the same.
Local high school football players still get their moment.
This week, the club recognized Benedictine’s Eron Mallard and Rasheen Jackson, New Hampstead’s Antonio Benton and Savannah Christian’s Ivyn Richardson for their performances during Weeks 3 and 4.

Week 3
Week 3 belonged to Benedictine.
The Cadets came away with a 27-23 victory over Camden County, and Mallard found more than one way to make a difference.
The Purdue commit carried the ball nine times for 170 yards and a touchdown. He also caught four passes for 53 yards, for 223 yards from scrimmage on just 13 touches.
That performance earned Mallard the Week 3 Offensive Player of the Week award.
On the other side of the ball, Rasheen Jackson seemed to be around it all night. The Benedictine linebacker finished with 17 tackles and earned Week 3 Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Two Cadets earned the honor, but each did so differently.
Week 4
New Hampstead quarterback Antonio Benton took care of business through the air in Week 4.
Benton threw for 363 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Phoenix to a 34--7 victory over Harris County. His big night earned him the Week 4 Offensive Player of the Week award.
The defensive honor went to Savannah Christian linebacker Ivyn Richardson.
Richardson recorded 17 tackles against Fellowship Christian and earned Week 4 Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Mallard made the most of every touch. Jackson and Richardson piled up tackles. Benton kept the football moving through the air.
All four gave the Savannah Quarterback Club something worth recognizing.
That is what these Monday nights are about.
The club also had a familiar voice from Saturdays in Athens in the room Monday night. Jeff Dantzler, the play-by-play radio voice of Georgia Bulldogs football, talked college football and took questions from club members.
The Savannah Quarterback Club meets each week at the American Legion at 1108 Bull Street, just south of Forsyth Park. Members come together for the camaraderie, college football talk, weekly game picks, and a guest speaker followed by a question-and-answer session.
But recognizing the local high school athletes who earned it on Friday night remains one of the most important parts of every meeting.
