St. Andrew’s Keeps Its "Ship" Hopes Alive, Habersham Gets Its Playoff Turn

The volleyball postseason is still going for St. Andrew’s. This week, Habersham gets its chance to keep playing, too.

St. Andrew’s took care of business Saturday, sweeping Dominion Christian and Bethlehem Christian to reach the Georgia Independent Athletic Association (GIAA) AAA semifinals. The Lions are 26-1 and scheduled to play Saturday, Oct. 9, at 2:30 p.m. at George Walton Academy, according to MaxPreps.

That’s a big next step for a team that has put together a special season. One more win would send the Lions to the championship match.

Habersham has a big match waiting Tuesday. The Patriots (21-16) won the Georgia Association of Private & Parochial Schools (GAPPS) Division I-A Region 8 tournament, defeating Trinity Christian and Veritas. Now they host Oakwood Christian at 6 p.m. The season is on the line, and the Patriots will have the home crowd behind them.

Savannah Country Day gave itself a chance Saturday, beating George Walton Academy, 3-1, before top-seeded Brookstone ended the Hornets’ run with a 3-0 win according to assistant SCDS athletic director Joey Blackmore. The Hornets finish the season 16-18.

Memorial Day started strong against LaGrange Academy, taking the first set in GIAA AA. LaGrange won the next three according to athletic director Andrea Bagnall. The Matadors’ finish witrh  a record of 10-11,

Georgia High School Association teams have region tournaments this week. When the postseason rankings are finalized, state playoff matches are scheduled to begin Oct. 17.

St. Andrew’s is one more game closer to a state championship match. Habersham will try to take its first step Tuesday.
