What started as a small club sport in parts of metro Atlanta and North Georgia has now become one of the fastest-growing high school sports in Georgia.
High school lacrosse officially became a GHSA-sanctioned championship sport during the 2004-2005 school year, after several years as a club sport in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
In the Coastal Empire, Benedictine Military School helped lead the way by starting the area’s first lacrosse program in 2009. According to Benedictine head coach Dustin White, Savannah-area teams competed with Augusta-area schools before the Savannah-area alignment officially started in 2019.
Today, lacrosse is a fully sanctioned GHSA sport with three state championship divisions across Georgia, and the Coastal Empire continues to produce top talent on both the boys' and girls' sides.
The GHSA Area 4-Division 2 includes 10 boys programs and nine girls programs:
Benedictine, Calvary Day School, Effingham County, Islands, Johnson-Savannah, Richmond Hill, Savannah Christian Preparatory School, Savannah Country Day School, South Effingham, and St. Vincent’s Academy.
The Georgia High School Lacrosse Coaches recently released the 2026 GHSA Area 4-Division 2 All-Area teams.

From club teams in the early 2000s to the strong programs throughout the Coastal Empire today, lacrosse continues to grow every season in the Savannah area. As rivalries continue getting stronger, participation numbers keep rising, and more student-athletes are now competing for all-area and all-state honors each spring.
