WHO'S IN? WHO'S OUT? One Week Left to Change the GHSA Football Playoff Picture

Well, sports fans, we're down to one week!

The latest GHSA Postseason Rankings are out, and eight teams in the Prep Sports Report coverage area are ranked in the Top 32.

That's the good news.

But what about the teams that aren't?

Liberty County is ranked No. 33 in Class 4A. Windsor Forest is No. 35, and Jenkins is No. 37 in Class 5A.

Now, that's what makes this final week interesting.

Some teams are trying to improve their playoff position. Others are trying to get into the field. And under the GHSA's postseason ranking system, winning your game isn't the only thing that matters. Your opponents' records count, too.

So where does everybody stand?

Here's a look at our area teams heading into the final week.

Class Private

SCISA and GIAA Playoff Picture

And don't forget about Bethesda Academy and Savannah Country Day!

Bethesda competes in the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA), while Savannah Country Day plays in the Georgia Independent Athletic Association (GIAA).

Both schools are outside the GHSA postseason ranking system, and as of this writing, their respective playoff brackets have not been finalized.

We'll have more on their playoff matchups once those brackets are released.

"DA" Coach's Take: One More Game!

Here's something I've learned from coaching football.

You worry about the game in front of you. The rest will take care of itself.

Benedictine is No. 7 in Class 5A. Calvary Day is No. 9 in the Private rankings. Both have put themselves in a good position heading into the final week.

Bradwell, South Effingham, Effingham County, Richmond Hill and Savannah Christian are also in the Top 32.

New Hampstead? At No. 31, the Phoenix don't have much room to spare.

And I'll be watching Liberty County, Windsor Forest and Jenkins. All three are outside the Top 32, but close enough that the final rankings are worth watching.

Now remember, just because a team wins Friday doesn't mean it automatically moves up. The GHSA formula includes opponents' winning percentages and their opponents' records.

That's what makes these rankings different from the old playoff system.

One more game, sports fans. Let's see who takes care of business Friday night and where everybody ends up Saturday morning.
