Georgia High School Association football returns tonight, Thursday, August 18, with the first of nearly 200 season openers around the state.
In the Savannah area, New Hampstead High School, out of GHSA Class 4A Region 3, takes on a South Carolina High School league neighbor across the Savannah river and state line in May River High School. The game will be played at Pooler Stadium with kickoff at 7 pm.
According to the Georgia High School Football Daily newsletter, The Maxwell Ratings, for GHSA Class 4A Region 3 has the Phoenix projected to finish in fourth place behind #1 Benedictine, #2 Burke County, and #3 Wayne County. Below is the Maxwell preseason projection with region rank, state rank, team rating projected win - loss record and chance of making the GHSA state football playoffs.
Per GHSFD, here is how the projections are figured. The Maxwell Ratings, compiled by mathematician and Georgia High School Football Historians Association founder Loren Maxwell, have projected the region finishes of all 412 football-playing schools in the GHSA. The projections are based on historical scores, with the most recent season weighing most heavily. Teams that did unusually well, or poorly, in 2021 are projected to regress toward the mean. The ratings do not consider changes in player personnel or coaching staff.
Here is the Week Zero Schedule. All games kickoff at 7:30 pm unless otherwise noted. All stats are courtesy of MaxPreps.
