Benedictine Military School picked up a region win on Tuesday, beating New Hampstead by a score of 50-34. These two teams faced off two weeks ago at New Hampstead, when the Cadets were defeated in overtime after letting the game slip away late in the fourth quarter.
“We have to learn to execute in the clutch. Hampstead did a better job than us of doing that at their place,” said Benedictine head coach Frank Williams.
The Cadets didn’t let that become a factor this time around, leading from wire to wire, and smothering New Hampstead from the opening tip.
After starting the game on a 9-2 run, the game slowed down, and BC took a 16-13 lead into the locker rooms.
“One of the hallmarks of any team that we try to produce is to play sound defense. Fortunately we were able to take a slim lead into half because neither team was doing a great job scoring,” Williams said.
After the difficult first half, Benedictine came out of halftime on fire, going on a 17-4 run to start the third quarter. The run put them up 33-17, and the Phoenix were never able to get the lead back to single digits.
“The keyword at halftime was energy. Our whole halftime was about getting some ‘get up and go’ about you. We had a real spirited halftime conversation, and our kids came out and responded,” Williams said.
8 of the 17 points on the run to open the second half were scored by freshman Kyree Richards, who finished the game with 15 points on 70% shooting.
“Kyrie is a super talented kid, a rare talent. The last freshman we had of this caliber was Caleb Jones, who ended up being two-time All-State, and Kyree’s on the same track,” Williams said.
Junior CaRon Hall was also fantastic for the Cadets, logging an 18-point double-double - anchoring the Cadets’ stifling defense with both his interior presence and work on the boards, and creating several second-chance possessions for BC on the offensive end.
This was a big win for the Cadets, boosting their confidence as they enter the final weeks of the season and the region tournament. BC travels to Ware County before coming home to face Wayne County next Tuesday in their final game of the regular season. New Hampstead will host Warner Robins before closing out the regular season with a road game at Perry.
Records: New Hampstead ( 3-5, 8-14); Benedictine (2-6, 4-16)
