Bump, Set, Spike - Region Volleyball Tournament Matchups Are Set!

As the 2024 regular volleyball season ends, teams across various state organizations, the Georgia High School Association (GHSA), the Georgia Independent Athletic Association (GIAA), and the Georgia Association of Private & Parochial Schools (GAPPS) are getting ready for the state championships. 

Teams in various areas are getting ready for local area tournaments, which could lead to a chance to compete in the state championships. Here's a preview of what's happening this week:

GHSA 6A, Area 1

In Region 1 of GHSA 6A, Richmond Hill finished undefeated and has already secured the top spot by winning the region tournament. This has earned the Wildcats a number-one seed in the GHSA state playoffs. 

GHSA 5A, Area 1

The region tournament for 5A-Area 1 will occur on October 10-11, 2024, at South Effingham High School. This ten-team region was subdivided into two five-team sub-regions during the season. Now these teams come together to face each other to advance to the states, with South Effingham hosting the tournament.

GHSA Class 3, Area 3

The tournament for Class 3-Area 3 starts this week on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. The first two rounds will be held at Calvary Day School, while the semifinals and finals will take place at Islands High School.

Wednesday, October 9, 2024 – Calvary Day School:

  • Match 1: Groves vs. Johnson, 4:00 pm
  • Match 2: Beach vs. Windsor, 4:00 pm
  • Match 3: Match 1 Winner vs. SEB, 5:30 pm
  • Match 4: Match 2 Winner vs. Calvary, 5:30 pm
  • Match 5: Long County vs. Islands, 7:00 pm
  • Match 6: Jenkins vs. Liberty County, TBD (played at Liberty County)

Friday, October 11, 2024 – Islands High School:

  • Match 7: Winner of Match 3 vs. Winner of Match 5 (Game time TBD)
  • Match 8: Winner of Match 4 vs. Winner of Match 6
  • Match 9: Consolation Match – Loser of Match 7 vs. Loser of Match 8
  • Match 10: Championship – Winner of Match 7 vs. Winner of Match 8

GHSA AA, Area 3

Savannah Arts Academy, the number one seed, will host the Class AA-Area 3 on Saturday, October 12th and the tournament will be held at Woodville Tompkins. The Panthers get a bye to the semifinals and will play the winner of Crisp Co. versus Tattnal Co.winner. Teams will play the quarterfinals starting at 9 am.

GHSA A, Area 3 

The top seed team, Savannah Christian Preparatory School, and #2 seed, St. Vincent's Academy, have byes into the semifinals. The region has advanced to the quarterfinals with play resuming today. The questerfinals take place tomorrow, Tuesday Otober 8th, and the championship match will take place on Thursday, October 10th at  at SCPS.

  • Monday, October 7: Bryan County vs. Savannah Country Day, 5:00 pm. The winner will face St. Vincent's Academy on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at 5 pm.
  • Brantley County will play Toombs County on October 7, with the winner advancing to play Savannah Christian on October 8, at 5 pm.

GIAA AAA

In the GIAA organzation, St. Andrew's School will go directly to the state playoffs this weekend. The Lions received a direct pass to the state playoffs when the regional tournamnet was canceled due to Hurricane Helene's effects.

GAPPS Area 1

On Tuesday, the Habersham School will host a first-round GAPPS playoff game against Peachtree Academy because Hurricane Helene affected the travel ability of other regional teams to cancel the tournament.

The region tournaments will be intense as teams battle for a place in the different state playoffs. Keep an eye on these key matchups as the season progresses to the state championships!
