The Calvary Day School Cavalier’s volleyball team played a huge region match against St. Vincent’s Academy on Thursday, October 15. The match would decide who finishes as the second or third seed in the region standings. At stake was a first-round home playoff. If you win, you stay home or lose you go on the road. The Lady Cavs took the first set winning 25-14, setting the team up for a clean sweep. A highlight occurred during the first game victory. Senior Tynley Smeltzer, who committed to the College of Charleston to play volleyball next year. Reached a milestone in her high school career. Tinley recorded her 1,000th career kill.
St. Vincent’s did not back down, coming back stronger than ever in the second set, and were leading 13-4. The Lady Cavs fought back with detemination to earn the sweep and made it close at 17-14 which led to a timeout by St. Vincent’s. Although the Saints were in the lead, the Cavs stormed back out scoring St. Vincent 11 to 6, winning 25-23, and claiming the second-place seed. This region victory earned the Lady Cavs a home match in the first round of state playoffs this coming Wednesday, October 21 against Whitefield Academy.
With the comeback win and the sweep. Calvary finished the season with an overall record of 22-8, the second seed, and a region record of 6-2.
