Woodville-Tompkins has played the role of the forgotten team among Savannah’s most prestigious programs. But the Wolverines have been more than just good under head coach Lenny Williams. They had a 6-1 record against other SCCPSS teams this season entering Saturday’s game. The only loss came Friday night against Jenkins, and Williams’ team was sluggish out of the gate against Class 3A No. 4 Johnson, clearly still playing with heavy legs from the night before.
Johnson (11-1) came out firing, leaving no doubts as to the outcome early on and cruising to a 102-65 victory over the Class 2A No. 3 Wolverines. Head coach Chuck Williams’ SCJ team was scoring buckets whenever, and however, it needed them. It felt a lot like a statement game for the Johnson team with state championship expectations in Class 3A. For Woodville (11-4) still dealing with players out from COVID, it felt like an acceptance.
The Atom Smashers took a 28-9 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. WT and Williams were using a five-in, five-out, substitution strategy to try and keep its legs fresh, but it was ultimately unsuccessful.
Johnson led 48-18 at halftime and eclipsed the 100-point mark with under a minute to play in the game. Rather than slowing the pace, Johnson outscored WT 40-26 in the final quarter when the game was all but over.
Junior Keane Carter nailed three 3’s in the opening quarter to pace SCJ, which lost its only other meeting with Woodville in December of 2019 at the Memorial Health Savannah Holiday Classic. The ‘smashers more than got even in 2021.
If balance was the goal, then consider it achieved for Campbell’s club. Antonio Baker had 22 points, E’Mondre Bowles 19, Micah Johnson 13, Jaheim Robinson 12 and Carter 11. Woodville got 13 points from Antonio Hunt and 12 from Lukas Platauna, all on 3’s.
