As the 2025-26 season bounces to the calendar in January, Savannah-area high school basketball is officially in the heat of region play. Week 9 standings show some teams separating themselves, some right in the mix, and others learning the hard lesson every coach knows well: region games leave no room for mistakes. Region play Is here full speed, and some Savannah-Area teams are already feeling the pressure.

The next six weeks will determine playoff spots, seeding, and momentum. Non-region wins built confidence early, but now, teams must take care of business against familiar opponents.

Below is a simple breakdown of where things stand, boys and girls, and what it means moving forward. Followed by Week 9 standings as of January 5, 2026 as posted on MaxPreps.com.

BOYS BASKETBALL

GHSA 6A – Region 1

This region is tight early. Valdosta, Colquitt County, and Lowndes are all 1-0 in region play. Lowndes also brings the best overall record in the group. Richmond Hill, Tift County, and Camden County are all 0-1, meaning the next game is critical to avoid falling behind.

Coach’s takeaway (key point): One win or loss here can determine the outcome of the entire race.

GHSA 5A – Region 1

Region play hasn’t started yet, but the table is set. Brunswick and Statesboro are rolling, Bradwell Institute is steady, and several teams are hovering around .500. Once region games tip off, expect quick movement in the standings.

Coach’s takeaway (key point): Details matter now—region games will reveal every strength and weakness.

GHSA 4A – Region 1

Ware County and Wayne County lead the way overall, but nobody has a region win yet. Benedictine and New Hampstead will need fast starts once region play begins.

Coach’s takeaway (key point): Winning the first two region games often determines which teams are contenders and which teams are chasing.

GHSA 3A – Region 3

This is one of the most competitive regions around. Long County sits at 3-0, but Beach, Liberty County, and Calvary Day are right behind at 3-1. Islands and Johnson are still within striking distance.

Coach’s takeaway: Don’t assume any loss is acceptable; every game is important.

GHSA Class A Division I – Region 3

Savannah Christian and Savannah Country Day are off to strong starts. Vidalia and Toombs County are right there as well. This region will come down to consistency.

GHSA Class A Division II – Region 3

Screven County (5-0) has the early edge, with McIntosh County Academy and Portal applying pressure. Bryan County is still fighting through region games.

Coach’s takeaway (key point): From this stage forward, only the region record truly matters.

Private & Independent Leagues

Bulloch Academy and St. Andrew’s lead GIAA AAAA/AAA District 2. In GIAA Class A Region 6, Citizens Christian and FPCA are setting the pace. GAPPS 1A Region 4 belongs to Heritage Christian and The Habersham School early.

Home School Basketball

Coastal Home School continues its dominant run, while Savannah Athletic Association looks to turn things around.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

GHSA 6A – Region 1

Valdosta, Lowndes, and Tift County all start 1-0 in region play. Richmond Hill, Colquitt County, and Camden County are chasing.

Coach’s takeaway (key point): Teams must respond quickly—early losses could cost playoff chances.

GHSA 5A – Region 1

Bradwell Institute remains unbeaten overall, with Brunswick and Glynn Academy also in strong position. Region play will test depth and discipline.

GHSA 3A – Region 3

Jenkins leads at 3-0, with Liberty County and Beach close behind. Groves is surging with a five-game win streak, while several teams are still searching for answers.

GHSA Class A Divisions D1 & D2

Bryan County is perfect in region play in Division II, while Vidalia holds the early edge in Division I. These races are far from settled.

Private & Independent Girls

Memorial Day leads GIAA Class A Region 6 overall, while Trinity Christian and Habersham are early leaders in GAPPS play.

WHY REGION RECORDS MATTER NOW

This is the point in the season where region wins outweigh non-region success. Overall records still tell part of the story, but region results determine seeding, playoff paths, and margin for error.

As Week 9 moves into January, one message stands out: Take care of your region games, or risk spending the rest of the season trying to catch up.

The next six weeks will define Savannah basketball. Standings as of January 5, 2026 from MaxPreps.com set the stage for the season ahead.
