Region Races Take Shape as Savannah Hoops Enter a Defining Week 6

As the 2025–26 high school basketball season moves into Week 6, the focus across Savannah-area gyms has shifted. Non-region games helped teams prepare and identify strengths early. Now, region games are critical, as a team's region record directly impacts postseason opportunities and playoff seeding.

Region play is separating contenders, tightening the middle, and increasing pressure on those chasing. Below is a look at where Savannah-area boys and girls teams stand, with region performance leading and overall records providing context.

All standings are as posted on MaxPreps.

BOYS BASKETBALL: REGION POSITIONING STARTS TO MATTER

GHSA Boys Class 6A — Region 1

Region play is beginning to take shape in Class 6A, Region 1, and the race at the top remains tight. Camden County (0–0 region, 7–1 overall) has set the early pace, but there is little separation behind them.

Richmond Hill (0–0, 5–2) is right in the thick of it, staying competitive and positioned to make a move as region games stack up. Lowndes (0–0, 6–4) and Tift County (0–0, 5–2) remain firmly in the mix, setting up a region race that could swing quickly over the next few weeks.

GHSA Class 5A — Region 1

Region play is still early, but positioning is important. Bradwell Institute (0–0 region, 7–2 overall) and Statesboro (0–0, 4–1) are well-positioned after strong starts. Brunswick (0–0, 6–2) and Evans (0–0, 5–2) are also in the mix. South Effingham (0–0, 6–7) has begun to build momentum after a slow start.

GHSA Class 3A — Region 3

This region is already taking shape, and Beach has made the biggest early statement. The Bulldogs are 3–0 in region play (6–3 overall) and have put themselves in a strong position heading into the heart of the schedule.

Long County (2–0 region, 7–1 overall) and Calvary Day (2–1, 7–1) remain right there, but Beach’s early region success has changed the tone of the race. Islands (2–0, 5–3) continues to apply steady pressure, keeping the standings tight at the top.

Further down the table, Jenkins (1–1, 2–3) and Johnson (1–2, 4–6) know that every region game matters from here on out, as separation continues to grow.

GHSA Class A

In Class A Division I, Vidalia (1–0 region, 5–0 overall) and Savannah Country Day (1–0, 4–3) have picked up early region wins, while Savannah Christian (0–0, 6–1) remains well-positioned.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: REGION RECORDS NOW DRIVE THE STORY

GHSA Class 6A — Region 1

Region play has yet to fully ramp up, but teams are jockeying for position. Valdosta (0–0 region, 7–1 overall) and Camden County (0–0, 7–1) lead overall. Colquitt County (0–0, 5–1) and Lowndes (0–0, 7–3) are close behind. Richmond Hill (0–0, 5–3) and Tift County (0–0, 5–4) sit in the middle as region games approach.

GHSA Class 5A — Region 1

Region play is defining this group. Glynn Academy (1–0 region, 8–4 overall) and Statesboro (1–0, 4–2) have early region wins. Bradwell Institute (0–0, 9–0) and Brunswick (0–0, 7–0) are unbeaten and ready to make their move in region play. South Effingham (0–0, 10–2) has also impressed early and remains firmly in the region conversation.

GHSA Class A

In Class A Division II, Bryan County (4–0 region, 9–1 overall) has separated itself early. Screven County (3–0, 5–2) is close behind, while Portal (1–2, 3–3) remains in contention as region play continues.

GIAA GIRLS BASKETBALL

Class A — Region 6

In the GIAA play, Memorial Day School (0–0 region, 9–1 overall) has emerged as an early leader. Robert Toombs Christian Academy (0–0, 4–3) and Citizens Christian Academy (0–0, 4–4) are battling to stay close, while First Preparatory Christian Academy (0–0, 0–0) is just getting started.
