For a second consecutive season, and a third time in the last four years, Savannah Country Day has started its football season at 2-0. The Hornets beat visiting Pinewood Christian Academy (from Bellville) handily, 28-6, on Friday, August 26 at Saunders Field.

SCDS (2-0) began last year at 3-0 under head coach John Mohring before finishing the season going 1-7 over their final eight games. After winning 31-0 over Windsor Forest last week, the Hornets shutout streak reached seven quarters until Pinewood scored late in Friday’s game.

Michael Grandy rushed for 96 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries to lead Mohring’s club in front of a large crowd of Hornet faithful. Grandy now has 987 career rushing yards with a good chance at breaking the 1,000-yard mark for his career next week at home.

It was 14-0 at halftime in favor of Country Day. The senior running back Grandy scored on a two-yard run after the Hornets converted on fourth and medium on the game’s first drive. The fourth down conversion came courtesy of Josh Washington’s leaping catch for 22 yards along the sideline. A freshman, Washington scored later in the first quarter when sophomore quarterback Barton Mixon hit him in stride for a 28-yard touchdown pass.

Country Day was threatening to score again late in the second quarter, but Walker Todd’s interception of Mixon thwarted the effort and sent the teams to halftime with Country Day up by two scores.

After Pinewood scored early in the fourth to pull within two scores at 21-6, Country Day’s Hyers Holland scored on a 34-yard rush to ice the game for good. Freshman SCDS kicker Cash Ramirez was 4-of-4 on extra-point attempts and his fellow freshman Washington finished with four catches for 78 yards and the score.

Washington also had an 18 yard run and, on defense, he added two pass breakups and five tackles as a defensive back on the other side of the ball. Sophomore defensive lineman/tight end Brooks Kleinpeter caught two passes for 21 yards while logging seven tackles (two for loss) and a tipped pass on defense.

The Patriots (1-1) showed flashes of having a high powered offense after the GIAA school put up 62 points in a win last week versus Robert Toombs. Sophomore quarterback Banks Booth threw for more than 125 yards and Jake Rogers had a game-high five catches for 46 yards and a touchdown.

Country Day will play host to Aquinas next week (September 2) in a matchup between two former Region 3-A Private foes.
