Savannah Prep Sports Roundup: South Effingham Wrestlers PIN Down 3rd & Who Won on the Basketball Court?

It was a busy weekend in Savannah Area prep sports. South Effingham High School performed well in the Georgia High School State Association (GHSA) wrestling dual championships, and individual HV Jenkins High School wrestlers pinning success despite tough team losses. 

 

South Effingham took third place at the GHSA Dual Championships, attempting a three-peat, while several HV Jenkins wrestlers achieved individual victories. On the basketball court, local teams battled again after playing Friday night, with the final scores for both girls' and boys' games below. Let's look at how these teams fared in their recent competitions.

 

Wrestling Results

South Effingham

South Effingham High School entered the competition riding high on back-to-back titles in the 2024-25 Georgia High School Association Dual Championships. The Mustangs put forth a strong effort in the recent tournament and secured a respectable third place after a series of impressive victories.

 

South Effingham defeated Habersham Central HS 54-15 in the opening round. They continued their momentum in the second round, edging out Alexander 35-31. In the quarterfinals, they dominated Dunwoody with a decisive 61-14 victory.

 

In the semifinal match against Creekview, South Effingham faced a nail-biter, ultimately falling short with a score of 42-35. Creekview advanced to the Finals and went on to clinch the Championship title. However, South Effingham bounced back in the third-place contest, decisively defeating Coffee with a score of 58-18.

 

Several South Effingham wrestlers delivered undefeated performances, helping the team secure 3rd place in the tournament. At 106 lbs, Andreo Manlove won by forfeit and a fall against Newnan (0:41), while Christopher Hardeman secured falls against Coffee (1:01) and Habersham Central (1:38). At 113 lbs, Tahrik Bailey dominated with a technical fall against Alexander (18-0) and a decision win over Coffee (11-6). At 120 lbs, Mayson Young secured wins by fall, including against Habersham Central (1:49) and Newnan (3:51). At 132 lbs, Alarik Gibson delivered wins by technical fall and fall, including 18-2 against Newnan and 2:20 against Coffee. At 157 lbs, Brandon Bringer won with technical falls, including 19-4 against Alexander and 18-2 against Newnan. At 285 lbs, Kevin Steptoe won all matches, including falls against Coffee (0:31) and Alexander (0:37). These wrestlers showcased skill and determination, leading South Effingham to a strong finish.

 

South Effingham's effort and determination earned them another spot on the podium for the third season.

 

Jenkins 

Jenkins High School put forth maximum effort in the tournament but ultimately lost two consecutive matches at the GHSA Class 3A Dual Wrestling Championships. In the first round, Jenkins took a loss to Gilmar 69-9. Then, in the second round, with a tough 58-21 loss to Oconee County.

 

Despite tough team losses, several Jenkins wrestlers delivered standout performances in the tournament. Kevin Ciccarella (165 lbs) pinned opponents from both Gilmer County and Oconee County with times of 2:30 and 3:04. Noah Lee-Whitaker (175 lbs) won by fall in 1:40 against Gilmer County and secured a win by medical forfeit against Oconee County. Brandon Borges (215 lbs) earned a hard-fought 8-6 decision over Gilmer County. Silas Harrison (157 lbs) pinned his Oconee County opponent in 3:07, while Bryce Anderson (285 lbs) won a 10-3 decision against Oconee County. These wrestlers showed determination and skill, earning important individual victories for Jenkins.
