Since 2019, the DeWitt Awards have recognized the best and brightest young athletes in Savannah, spotlighting 8th-grade student-athletes who excel not just on the field but in the classroom and their communities.

Established by the Exchange Club of Savannah and spearheaded by David DeWitt, the awards honor the next generation of athletic and academic leaders from public and private schools.

Each year, local coaches, principals, and athletic directors nominate student-athletes who demonstrate standout sports performances, maintain strong academic records, show good sportsmanship, and engage in community service. This program is designed not only to reward athletic success but also to promote well-rounded development among Savannah's youth.

2025 DeWitt Award Winners – Athletes of the Year

Public School Female Athlete of the Year

Sutton Meece – Garrison School for the Arts

Nominated by Coach and AD Jamie Salas, Sutton Meece is the definition of versatility. A five-sport athlete—the first in school history—Meece has made her mark in cross country, volleyball, basketball, track, and soccer while maintaining a 97.8 GPA and making the High Honor Roll. She held a lead role in two school plays, volunteered with the Humane Society and Savannah Children's Theatre, and helped younger students as a Book Buddy. She'll attend Savannah Arts Academy next year.

Public School Male Athlete of the Year (Co-Winner)

Ba'Nari Mells – Oglethorpe Charter School

Mells, a two-sport standout and team leader, quarterbacked his team to an undefeated football season and a city championship. On the basketball court, he played point guard, led in assists and steals, and earned MVP honors. He also contributed to soccer. Mells, who volunteers to mentor young athletes, will attend Jenkins High School.

Public School Male Athlete of the Year (Co-Winner)

Malachi Golden-Reedy – Oglethorpe Charter School

Golden-Reedy starred as a wide receiver and cornerback on Oglethorpe's undefeated football team. He was a highlight machine with key interceptions and return touchdowns. In basketball, he led his team in scoring and rebounding en route to a city title and All-Star Showcase selection. With an 89 GPA and church involvement, Malachi will attend Calvary Day School.

Private School Female Athlete of the Year

Saige Walker – Calvary Day School

Nominated by Athletic Director Phillip Lee, Walker shined in basketball, track, and flag football. On the court, she led JV basketball in scoring as an 8th grader, playing up every year before that. In track, she swept SPAL titles in four events. On the flag football field, she played quarterback, RB, WR, and Safety. With a 93 GPA and community service experience, Walker is set to take her talents to Hebron School.

Private School Male Athlete of the Year (Co-Winner)

Matt Gibson – Calvary Day School

Gibson led Calvary's football team to an SPAL championship with 1,544 all-purpose yards, 22 touchdowns, and 27 tackles. He was a multi-sport athlete and contributed to the school's JV basketball and baseball teams. With a 98 GPA, honor roll distinction, and school volunteer work, Gibson is a hardworking leader with a bright future.

Private School Male Athlete of the Year (Co-Winner)

Kyree Richards – Saint James School

Despite an injury-shortened football season, Richards dazzled with five touchdowns in just two games. In basketball, he was a dominant force throughout middle school, playing on championship teams and averaging 18 points per game as a 6th grader. He also claimed SPAL titles in the long and high jumps (5'2"). Kyree volunteers at Windsor Forest Community Center off the field and will attend Benedictine next year.

The DeWitt Awards continue to be a key recognition for middle school student-athletes in Savannah, reinforcing the values of hard work, leadership, and service. These 2025 winners represent the future of academic and athletics in the area and the next generation of leaders in every sense.
