Savannah Country Day School (SCDS) has announced that it will change its high school athletic leagues beginning with the 2026–2028 cycle and transition to the Georgia Independent Athletic Association (GIAA).
The school elected to make the move following more than 18 months of research, analysis, and community input focused on how best to support student-athletes and advance Hornet athletics.
"We think this aligns very well with the mission of our school to compete in the GIAA with schools that share our values and goals, especially other private schools that operate in a similar way," said SCDS Athletic Director James Franklin. ”There are numerous benefits. Competitive balance, scheduling flexibility, and stronger alignment in both academics and mission. We really feel it’s a great fit for our culture and community as we continue to provide the best possible athletic experience for our students and families."
The GIAA includes independent schools across Georgia, including St. Andrew's School and Memorial Day School in Savannah, that share similar values and educational philosophies. Being a GIAA member will provide several advantages for Savannah Country Day, such as greater scheduling flexibility that allows for competition against GIAA, GHSA, and out-of-state schools; enrollment flexibility and transparency, ensuring immediate varsity eligibility for new and transfer students.
“We are excited about the opportunities this change brings to our students and our programs,” Franklin said. “The GIAA will allow us to continue competing at a high level while maintaining the balance and values that define Savannah Country Day.”
