The St. Vincent’s Saints defeated the Savannah Country Day Lady Hornets in straight sets Tuesday night, securing their spot in the Region Final. It was a dominant performance from start to finish for the Saints, who controlled the pace and momentum across all three sets with consistent serving, aggressive net play, and sharp communication.
The Saints took control early in the opening set, jumping out to a commanding 7-2 lead and never looking back. They maintained their momentum throughout, closing the set with a 5-0 run to win 25-15.
“It all boils down to confidence and how we choose to start our matches,” said Saints head coach Sarah Stewart. “The girls were fired up to have a home region semifinal match, so it was already an electric feeling; having them start off strong was the icing on the cake.”
The second set proved to be more competitive. Both teams exchanged points early, but St. Vincent’s broke a 6-6 tie with a four-point run to take a 10-6 lead. Country Day responded quickly, going ahead 14-13, but the Saints answered with a six-point run to regain control at 19-14. They held off the Hornets from there, closing out the set 25-19.
With the sweep in sight, St. Vincent’s came out on fire in the third set, racing to a 20-9 advantage. Country Day showed resilience with a late push, narrowing the deficit to 21-17, but the Saints regrouped and sealed the match with a 25-21 win.
St. Vincent’s will face Savannah Christian in the Region Final on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Savannah Christian. The teams split their regular-season meetings — St. Vincent’s won 2-0 on Aug. 14, while Savannah Christian earned a 2-1 victory on Sept. 4.
“Going into Thursday with a home win is huge,” Stewart said. “We have eight seniors that want to leave it all out on the court and win a region championship.”
