The Habersham School Still Running the Base Paths to a GAPPS Championship

The Habersham School baseball program is still on the road to a GAPPS state championship. The Patriots defeated the Harvester Christian Academy Hawks in a three-game series with a decisive victory in game three. The Habersham School will take to the diamond at the Vidalia Recreation Department Friday, May 14, 2021, to bring the "SHIP" back to Savannah, Georgia. 

 

Here is the recap of the Patriots Georgia Association of Private & Parochial Schools (GAPPS) semi-final matchup against Harvester Christian Academy.

 

Game #1: Habersham 5, Harvester Chrisitan 3

The Habersham School Patriots baseball team ran off with the lead late in the game in a 5-3 victory over Harvester Christian Academy in game one of the GAPPS Class A semi-final series on May 7, 2020. The game tied at three, with The Patriots batting in the bottom of the sixth when Ed Beck Yannett singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run to give Habersham the lead for good.

 

Harvester Christian Academy jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning, but Habersham still managed to pull out the victory. The Patriots knotted the game up at three in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Jack Hogan singled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run.

 

Highlights for Habersham was Luke Rowland, who earned the win as the right-hander allowed three hits and three runs over seven innings, striking out eight. At the plate, Tyler Tift had a day hitting a home run in the third inning. On the day, Tyler went 2-for-3 at the plate beside the home run. Tift had a double and two runs batted to lead the team.

 

Game # 2:  Harvester Chrisitan 6, Habersham 5

 

A walk-off left The Habersham School Patriots Varsity on the wrong end of the bat in a 6-5 defeat. The game was tied at five, with Harvester Christian batting in the bottom of the seventh when Thomas Lovins singled on a 2-2 count, knocking in the walk-off run for Harvester.

 

Habersham had a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth when the Hawks scored three in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-4 lead. Habersham would tie the game in the seventh, 5-5, but Harvester would walk off the win to tie the series at one apiece. The "IF" game was all set for Saturday, May 8, 20201, at 12:30 pm in Port Wentworth, as the winner would advance to the GAPPS Class A Championships.

 

Highlights for the Patriots were Jack Hogan took the loss but lasted five and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits and four runs while striking out six. The Habersham School collected five hits in the game. Luke Rowland and Thomas Tift each managed multiple hits. 

 

Game #3: Habersham 13, Harvester Christian 3

 

Jack Hogan came to the ballpark and meant business on Saturday, tallying four hits and leading Habersham to a 13-3 win over Harvester Christian. Hogan singled in the first, singled in the third, singled in the fourth, and doubled in the fifth.

 

Harvester Christian took the lead 1-0 in the first inning, when Cody Johnson singled on a 0-1 count, scoring the first run of the winner takes all game. Habersham answered with six runs of their own in the bottom of the third and never looked back.  

The Patriots pulled away for good with six runs in the bottom of the third inning. Hogan singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run, Henderson Hughes drew a walk, scoring one run, and Luke Rowland homered on a 0-2 count, scoring four runs.

 

Highlights: On the mound, Tyler Tift earned the win for Habersham. The righty allowed five hits and three runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out three. Hughes threw one and one-third innings in relief out of the bullpen. Rowland had a homer in the third inning with four rbi; Hogan went 4-for-4 with four rbi at the plate to lead Habersham. 

What is up next for The Habersham School? The GAPPS Class "A" Championship series will take place Friday, May 14, 2021, at Vidalia Heritage Academy. The series will occur at the Vidalia Recreation Department as Game 1 starts at 3:30 pm, with Game 2 immediately following 30 minutes after Game 1.
