Coach’s Corner Players of the Week

Every week, there are players who refuse to let the moment be too big. Underclasmen did it last week, a freshman point guard and a sophomore guard showed poise, confidence, and playmaking beyond their years.

Kyla Shuman | South Effingham High School

Freshman | Point Guard

South Effingham freshman Kyla Shuman played like a veteran in a key game against Statesboro.

Shuman finished with 25 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. When both team leaders, Kailyn Chapman and Hayden Johanson, were being face guarded, Shuman stepped up and took control of the offense.

Head coach Alexus Parker said her maturity stood out.

“As a freshman starting on varsity, her maturity and determination to take control over the game was impressive,” Parker said.

According to Parker, Shuman is more than just a basketball player. She is a three-sport athlete, competing in track, basketball, and flag football. Track is her first love. On top of that, she maintains High Honor Roll in the classroom.

That’s what being a true student-athlete looks like.

Peyton Bean | Savannah Country Day School

Sophomore | Guard

Savannah Country Day sophomore Peyton Bean continues to impact the game in many ways.

Against Savannah Christian last week, Bean scored 14 points with four rebounds and three steals. In another strong outing against Toombs County, he finished with 19 points, five rebounds, six steals, and a block.

On the season, Bean leads the team in scoring at 12.8 points per game. He also leads the team in deflections, steals, and blocks.

Head coach Sean Sweeney said Bean’s energy changes games.

“Peyton makes big plays that spark our team,” Sweeney said. “He loves the LeBron-style chase-down block and a big dunk in transition—both plays give our team great energy. When we need a stop on defense, I always expect Peyton to come up with the play.”

Whether it’s scoring, defending, or making hustle plays, Bean finds ways to lift his team.
