Winston Wright Jr., a Memorial Day School alum (2019), has signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted rookie, bringing a strong football resume to the NFL.

Wright’s football career covered 49 games at West Virginia, Florida State, and most recently, East Carolina. He closed out his college chapter in 2024 with 1,255 all-purpose yards and eight touchdowns. As a kick returner, he earned Second Team All-America honors. He also helped ECU land a bowl bid to face NC State in the Go Bowling Military Bowl.

Wright starred at Memorial Day School in Savannah, Georgia, where he was a three-time all-state and all-region player, winning two state championships. As a senior, he totaled over 1,700 yards and was named MVP.

Wright also earned the Ashley Dearing Award in 2019 as Savannah’s most versatile male athlete, becoming the first winner from Memorial Day School. The late Memorial Day's long-time athletic director, Mark Sussman, knew Winston was a special student-athlete, as posted on the school's website after Winston won the Dearing award in May 2019.

Sussman said, "He’s a great athlete, but people may not realize the student part — Winston has a 3.5 GPA,” Sussman said. “He is respected by his teachers for what he does in the classroom. I see him coming out of the YMCA at 6:30 a.m. every day. He does all he can to stay ahead of the competition. He’s a yes sir, no mam type of kid, and he’s from a good Christian family and always talks about how blessed he is."

“People see that he’s a great athlete, but they might not see the work ethic behind everything Winston does. He’s a once-in-a-lifetime student-athlete, and we’re very proud to have him at Memorial Day. It’s an honor for him and his family, and it’s also an honor for our school.”  Yes, you were correct, Mark Sussman. His work ethic in the classroom and on the field has gotten him to every level in the sport of football.

WRIGHT WINS PRESTIGIOUS ASHLEY DEARING AWARD

Wright will wear No. 38 for the Browns as he enters a wide receiver room led by NFL Pro Bowlers Jerry Jeudy and Diontae Johnson. With a 26.8-yard kickoff return average, plus three career return touchdowns, his special-teams value stands out. These strengths give Wright a real shot at making the roster.

Next up, Wright aims to make the most of his training camp reps and preseason snaps. He’ll fight for a spot in Cleveland, all while proudly representing the 912 on football’s biggest stage.
