Dr. John Burke, a 2010 graduate of Savannah Christian Preparatory School (SCPS), was a standout three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. After years of high competition, an injury during football season introduced him to the world of orthopedics—an experience that would eventually shape his career.
Burke has returned home to Savannah, Georgia, not as an athlete but as an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hand, wrist, and elbow injuries. After spending over a decade studying and training in medicine, he's helping athletes and everyday patients regain mobility and return to their active lives.
From the Field to the Operating Room
After graduating from SCPS, Burke attended the University of Georgia (2010-2014) and earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia (2014-2018). He completed his orthopedic residency at the University of Florida's Jacksonville campus and trained at the Mayo Clinic of Florida (2018-2023). To further specialize in hand and wrist surgery, he completed a fellowship at Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Despite spending years away for education and training, Burke always knew he wanted to return home. "I always wanted to come back to Savannah, but I knew being a smaller city, it wasn't a guarantee. I was thrilled that Optim Orthopedics gave me the opportunity to return and serve my community."
Helping Athletes Like He Once Was
Burke's passion for sports medicine comes from personal experience. After suffering a football injury in high school, he gained firsthand knowledge of what it takes to recover. That perspective helps him connect with athletes facing similar setbacks.
"Everybody wants to get back to normal—to be pain-free, to have full range of motion," Burke said. "When you're going through an injury, it's easy to feel frustrated. I try to help athletes understand that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Recovery takes time, but with the right treatment plan, they can get back to doing what they love."
His ability to relate to his patients goes beyond medical treatment—he understands the mental and emotional challenges of injuries.
"Having been in their shoes, I know what it feels like to be sidelined. It's not just about the physical recovery—it's about keeping athletes motivated and setting realistic expectations for their return."
The Role of Sports Medicine in Savannah's Growing Athletic Scene
Savannah's sports landscape has continued to expand, from youth leagues to high school powerhouses and even professional teams like the Savannah Bananas and the Savannah Ghost Pirates. Burke recognizes that keeping athletes healthy at all levels is key to their success.
"Sports medicine has evolved tremendously," he said. "It's not just about treatment anymore—prevention has become just as important. We now have advanced technology and training programs designed to reduce the risk of injuries before they happen."
He emphasized how preventative care has become a top priority, especially for athletes prone to injuries like ACL tears.
"For example, we know that female athletes are at a higher risk for ACL injuries, but we also know specific training techniques to help prevent them. My goal is to make sure athletes—whether they're in youth sports or playing professionally—are prepared and protected before they even step on the field."
Returning to Savannah and Making an Impact
Since joining Optim Orthopedics in September 2024, Burke has started working with local athletes and even treated some familiar faces.
"I've already performed surgery on several local athletes, and it's been amazing to see them get back to competing. That's the most rewarding part—helping someone recover and watching them succeed again," Burke said.
Beyond the operating room, he takes pride in being a resource for the Savannah community, often assisting friends of friends who seek advice.
"It really means a lot when people I grew up with trust me to help them or their family members. That's why I went into medicine—to serve others. Doing it in my hometown makes it even more special."
Full Circle
Burke's journey—from a Savannah Christian athlete to a top orthopedic specialist—is one of dedication, passion, and giving back. While his playing days are behind him, he's still deeply involved in the sports world, ensuring that athletes across Savannah stay healthy and strong.
"This community has given me so much, and I'm honored to give back in this way. Whether it's treating an athlete trying to get back on the field or helping someone regain normal function in their daily life, it's a privilege to be in this position."
The same football fields, basketball courts, and baseball diamonds where he once played are home to the athletes he now helps. Dr. John Burke has indeed come full circle.
