The Prep Sports Report previews the 2022 high school football season for Savannah area teams by taking a look at some of the top quarterbacks coming to a field near you this fall. All stats are courtesy of MaxPreps unless otherwise noted and there is no specific ranking in order of posting of quarterbacks.
Savannah Christian’s football team enters nearly every season with high expectations and despite losing a rare talent at wide receiver, this season is no different in Raider land. They expect to win.
The likely starter at quarterback for head coach Baker Woodward’s team is rising senior Paulus Zittrauer. He talked over the phone with PSR on June 24 about his goals for himself, and for the team, this fall.
“A lot of the big focuses for me have been about getting faster and more athletic in the pocket,” said Zittrauer. “I think as an offense, we’ll be trying to mesh and get used to not having (2021 graduate and All-State receiver) George Futch around anymore. The younger guys have a lot of talent and I think we’ll have more variety in the passing game this season.”
Zittrauer threw for 980 yards and nine touchdowns on 74-of-128 passing (58 percent) last season as a junior. The Raiders finished the season at 5-6 overall, losing four games by nine points or less, and three by one possession.
Midway through the season and with the SCPS record sitting at 3-2, Zittrauer landed hard on his head after being tackled at the end of a game versus First Presbyterian in Macon on October 1. He was concussed and forced to miss two games, including a majority of the 21-0 rivalry loss at eventual region champ Calvary Day.
“I got hit and when my head hit the ground, I was unconscious for a little bit,” Zittrauer said of the injury. “I remember the play call, but I don’t remember it happening. I just remember the trainer Colton coming over and waking me up. It was tough for me, but I’m grateful it wasn’t anything more serious.”
The Raiders jump up to Class 3A this season, playing in GHSA region 3-3A with Calvary, Country Day and several SCCPSS teams. A higher classification won’t put a damper on the outlook for SCPS. Zittrauer says he’ll be concentrating on the smaller goals in the hopes of achieving something bigger come playoff time.
“This season we’re all about family and being together on the same page,” Zittrauer said. “It’s all about getting better each day. Improving constantly and getting better each week, so when we get down to the end, we’ll be competing for a region championship and focusing on making a good playoff run.”
SCPS opens its 2022 season on August 19 at Pooler Stadium versus Hilton Head Christian.
