The Prep Sports Report previews the 2022 high school football season for Savannah area teams by taking a look at some of the top quarterbacks coming to a field near you this fall. All stats are courtesy of MaxPreps unless otherwise noted and there is no specific ranking in order of posting of quarterbacks.

As Richmond Hill football prepares for its first season playing in Georgia High School Association’s highest classification, the team’s quarterback is also looking to take a step up in 2022. Rising senior Ty Goldrick returns behind center this fall for head coach Matt LeZotte’s squad, which finished at 4-6 overall in 2021.

Goldrick was good as a junior, make no mistake. He threw for 1,573 yards and 10 touchdowns (10 interceptions) on 110-of-175 passing (63 percent).

Against a difficult schedule, Goldrick and the RHHS offense averaged just 18.9 points per game in 2021. With the starting quarterback and several other key players returning on that side of the ball, “The Hill” should be much improved in 2022 in terms of scoring output.

Ravon Grant and Nick Bliss are two receivers with plenty of past production working with Goldrick. Grant tallied 46 receptions, 793 yards and five touchdowns as a junior last season, and Bliss was solid as a sophomore with 21 catches for 249 yards and two scores.

Behind Goldrick will be running backs Zion Gillard (111 carries, 574 yards, four touchdowns in 2021) and Caleb Easterling (48, 238, 5). The former was one of the best freshmen in the area last season while showing rare big-play ability with the ball in his hands.

Richmond Hill finished region play last season with a 4-2 record in 2-6A, good enough for the region’s No. 2 seed and a home state playoff game versus a 3-seed. The Wildcats lost to Lovejoy in the Class 6A first round, 19-14. It was the third time RHHS lost a game by six points or less.

The Wildcats move up to Class 7A this season, playing in a loaded region 1-7A with the likes of Valdosta, Lowndes County, Camden County and Colquitt County. The 2022 season opener versus Effingham County is scheduled for August 19 in Richmond Hill.
