Georgia High School Association state golf tournaments started on May 19 all over the state, and several area teams and individuals are in contention for a state championship after the first round.
Class AAAAAA Boys
Richmond Hill High School junior Ledget Conley leads the tournament after a first-round score of 3-under par 69 at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga.
Junior Matthew Reynolds is T4 after a score of Even par 72, and the Wildcats are in fourth place as team five strokes behind Carrolton High School. Other counting score for Richmond Hill included junior Patrick Mahaffey's 4-over 76 and senior Will McNeely's 11-over par 83.
Class AAAAAA Girls
Richmond Hill junior Amanda Puchales is in fourth place at the Class AAAAAA girls state championship after her first round score of 4-over par 76 at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.
Benedictine Military School sophomore Bear Dollander carded a score of 6-under 66 in the first round of the Class AAAA state championship being played at Governors Towne Club in Acworth, Ga., and the Cadets are in third place behind leaders North Oconnee High School and Cartersville High School.
Dollander is tied with Blake Goodroe from Madison High School, and BC sophomore Jack Weeks is T14 after a first round score of Even par 72. Other counting score for BC included freshman Alex Dao's 3-over par 75 and junior Chad Chadwell's 6-over par 78.
Class AA Girls
Savannah Arts Academy freshman Maya Lilja-Vazquez is alone in second place at the Class AA state championship after a first-round score of 7-over par 79 at Maple Ridge Golf Club in Columbus, Ga.
Lilja-Vazquez is only four stroked behind leader Mackenzie Connell from Pierce County High School. Lilja-Vazquez qualified for the state tournament as an individual after finishing runner up in the Area tournament.
GHSA Private Boys
Savannah Country Day School freshman Kohki Maeda is T8 in the GHSA Private School state tournament after a first round score of 1-over par 73 at Twin City Country Club in Tennille, Ga.
Maeda is six strokes behind leader Brody McQeen from Mt. Paran Christian Academy entering the second round.
GHSA Private Girls
Savannah Country Day School senior Kate Barber is T2 at the GHSA Private School state tournament following a score of Even par 72 at Twin City Country Club in Tennille, Ga.
Barber is trails leader Claire Bradford from Prince Avenue Christian Academy by four strokes. Savannah Christian Preparatory School senior Ava Cottis is T6 after a score 4-over par 76 in the first round.
