Local qualifying for Drive, Chip and Putt took place on June 29 at Sea Island Golf Club on Sea Island, Ga., and Savannah junior golfers stole the show.
Savannah's Caroline Burroughs, a rising 8th grader at Blessed Sacrament School, won the Girls 14-15 age division and recorded the highest total score for any age division at the qualifying site. She won Driving with 35 points, totaled 35 points in Chipping and won Putting with 65 points for a total score of 135 that was six points higher than any other competitor in any age division.
Other age division winners from the Savannah area included Rivers Hood in the Boys 7-9 age group, Savannah's Ellie Johnson in Girls 7-9 and Richmond Hill's Victoria Grant in Girls 10-11. Hood won all three skills for his age group and totaled 125 points.
The top three scores in each category advanced to a Sub Regional Qualfiier, which will take palce on July 30 at Deer Creek Golf Club at the Landings Club on Skidaway Island. Drive, Chip and Putt is a free nationwide junior golf development competition founded in 2013 jointly by The Masters Tournament, the United States Golf Association and The PGA of America. It's intent is to grow the game by focusing on the three fundamental skills employed in golf. Participants who advance through local, sub-regional and regional qualifying in each age/gender category earn a place in the National Finals conducted at Augusta National Golf Club the Sunday before the Masters Tournament and is broadcast live by Golf Channel.
