With a new coach at Calvary Day School, the boys' soccer team is off to a stronger start and more focused than ever.
The Calvary Day School boys soccer team continued its undefeated start Tuesday night, defeating Jenkins 5-0 to improve to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the region on the season under new Head Coach Liam Haycock.
Coach Liam Haycock has already challenged players to work hard on the field
and aim for a winning season. After a challenging yet outstanding season last year, the boys' soccer team is more willing to prepare themselves for the challenges ahead.
Coach Haycock brings a wide range of experience to the program, having coached internationally and across various locations in the United States. He emphasizes effort, discipline, and teamwork in his coaching approach. According to Coach, what excites him the most about this group of players is their commitment and determination.
The team has a wide variety of players, from freshmen to seniors, and they have an optimistic outlook. Liam focuses on maintaining the same intensity in practice as players are expected to bring in games.
One of Coach’s main priorities is building trust and consistency between practices and games, stating, “If I can trust a player on the field, then I can trust him during a game.”
For Ronald Joe Newsome, a sophomore, the wins are encouraging, but the team knows there is still room to grow. Newsome enjoys the spirit of the practices and the structure that Coach Haycock brings to the practices. With early success on the scoreboard, the team's players are eager to continue improving as they face tougher opponents.
Adjusting to a new coach may take time, but the boys' soccer team is settling in quickly this spring season. Players state that the team's chemistry and new techniques have improved the team overall.
Depending on their schedule, the players practice early in the morning or train for an hour in the weight room, continuing for an hour and a half to the field. The practices are demanding, but they build discipline to strive to get better every day.
Looking ahead, Haycock strives to better the team as the GHSA league approaches. With stronger competition ahead, Haycock wants the players to bring the same energy from their practices onto the field.
He stated that it is “not just about winning games” but “about creating an environment where players push each other for self-improvement.”
The seniors have a key role on the team by setting the standard for effort and mentoring younger teammates. Senior Anson Greer (MF) is a key player for the team, bringing experience and leadership in the midfield. The Cavaliers are also led by a strong senior group that includes goalkeeper Ethan Harris, defenders Shields Brown, Johnny Maddox, Marshall Futrell, and Grady Shiver, forward Carter Batts, and midfielder Alejandro Llerena. Led by dedicated seniors, a committed coach, and a team that pushes itself every day, the Calvary boys soccer team is poised to turn early success into a season the school will remember for years to come.
