Cason Reaches 1,000 Assists, Savannah Christian Off to Perfect 13-0 Start

There are milestones, and then there are milestones that put your name in some pretty select company. Savannah Christian junior setter Carinne Cason has done just that.

Cason recently surpassed 1,000 career assists, becoming only the fourth player in Savannah Christian volleyball history to reach the milestone according to SCPS athletics on social media. She was honored before the Raiders' home opener on Aug. 20, and the accomplishment comes during quite a start for Savannah Christian.

The Raiders are 13-0, but another number jumps off the page. Savannah Christian has not dropped a single set all season. That's 13 straight wins and a perfect 26-0 mark in sets, with the Raiders going 3-0 at home, 4-0 on the road and 6-0 at neutral sites.

And right in the middle of that start is Cason.

Cason Sets the Table

Setters don't always get the attention that comes with putting the ball away, but every good attack has to start somewhere. For Savannah Christian, a lot of it starts with Cason.

The junior leads the Raiders with 131 assists this season, consistently putting her hitters in position to finish points. She recorded 17 assists against Greenbrier and matched that total with 17 against Bryan County.

Now Cason has another number by her name: 1,000 career assists. Only three Savannah Christian players before her had reached the mark, and Cason is only a junior.

Shippy Killing it at the Net

When Cason puts the ball in the right spot, junior outside hitter Myla Shippy has been doing plenty with it. Shippy leads the Raiders with 97 kills and also tops the team with 19 service aces.

Shippy recorded 11 kills and seven digs against Greenbrier and had nine kills in victories over Camden County and Bryan County. That's production at the net and from the service line, and it has been a big part of Savannah Christian's fast start.

Ritzert Digging the Back Row

Good volleyball isn't just about the big swing. Somebody has to control that first ball, keep rallies alive, and give the setter a chance to run the offense.

Junior Avery Ritzert has been doing plenty of that for Savannah Christian. Ritzert leads the Raiders with 79 digs and 87 receptions, numbers that might not always grab the headline but certainly help teams win volleyball matches.

Falzarano Blocks the Net

Junior middle blocker Taylor Falzarano gives the Raiders another weapon up front, leading Savannah Christian with 12 total blocks. Her work at the net has added another defensive piece to a lineup getting contributions from all over the floor.

Sophomore Ella Burgstiner and juniors Savannah Griffin and Heidi Henninger have also contributed for a Savannah Christian team that has yet to find itself on the losing side of a match or even a set.

That's what makes this start worth watching. Savannah Christian isn't just 13-0; the Raiders are 26-0 in sets, and along the way Cason has joined a club that only three Raiders had entered before her.

One thousand career assists, only the fourth Savannah Christian player to do it, and she's got plenty of volleyball still ahead of her.

Next Up

The perfect start gets another test Tuesday, September 1st, as Savannah Christian travels to South Effingham to take on two top Savannah area programs, South Effingham and Effingham County.
