Four weeks down, and the games are starting to carry a little more weight.
Region play is here for several Savannah-area teams. Richmond Hill is 4-0. South Effingham and Islands are still unbeaten. Benedictine comes off a bye and opens region play against an unbeaten Statesboro team.
Then there's Savannah Christian and Savannah Country Day. Two teams that know each other well and surely could use a Friday night win.
So what has the Prep Sports Report's attention in Week 5? Plenty.
BENEDICTINE AT STATESBORO
Benedictine (2-1) at Statesboro (3-0), 7:30 p.m.
Now this is a football game.
Both teams had last week off, so both had an extra week to get healthy and get ready for this one. More importantly, this is the Region 1-5A opener. These are the games that start to matter in November.
Benedictine has plenty of weapons. Stanley Smart Jr. has rushed for 409 yards through three games, while Eron Mallard can hurt you running or catching. Quarterback Omari Burse has also taken care of business, throwing for 464 yards and seven touchdowns without an interception.
Statesboro wants to pound the football, and DJ Brooks is a big part of that. He's rushed for 331 yards and has scored at least twice in every game.
For BC, it starts up front. Win first down, slow down Brooks, and put Statesboro in situations where it has to throw. That's easier said than done against a 3-0 team playing at home.
Strength against strength. Circle this one.
WANDO AT RICHMOND HILL
Wando, S.C. (3-1) at Richmond Hill (4-0), 7 p.m.
Richmond Hill keeps finding ways, and last week might have been the best example yet. Ware County lined up for a potential game-winning field goal, Shane Tucker blocked it, and Eli Grant picked it up and went 96 yards the other way. Ballgame.
Now the Wildcats come home 4-0 with Wando making the trip down from Mount Pleasant. Keep an eye on CJ Menzie in the Richmond Hill backfield. He rushed for 106 yards last week, while quarterback Gunner Mobley has been steady, and Grant has already shown he can change a game on offense, defense, or special teams.
That's what has stood out about Richmond Hill so far. The Wildcats haven't had to win the same way every Friday night. Wando gets the next shot.
GREENBRIER AT SOUTH EFFINGHAM
Greenbrier (1-2) at South Effingham (3-0), 7:30 p.m.
South Effingham had a week off, and now we find out what the Mustangs do with it.
They're 3-0 after wins over Screven County, Johnson, and Windsor Forest. This week, Greenbrier comes to town, and the region schedule begins.
Khyran White is a name to watch in the South Effingham backfield. Don't forget Semaj Calhoun, either. He showed what can happen when you give him room: he took a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown against Windsor Forest.
The Mustangs have found different ways to put points on the board. They've gotten them from the offense, defense, and special teams.
But forget 3-0 for a minute. Everybody starts 0-0 in the region, and now these games count a little differently.
SAVANNAH CHRISTIAN AT SAVANNAH COUNTRY DAY
Savannah Christian (1-3) at Savannah Country Day (0-5), 7 p.m.
Don't get fooled by the records here. Savannah Christian has dropped three straight, and Savannah Country Day is still looking for its first win.
For Savannah Christian, Caden Godbee runs the offense at quarterback, and Wesley Dinkins gives the Raiders a running-game threat. William Bucey is another name to watch on the outside. Country Day has leaned on Thomas Holland in the running game.
But this one isn't all about numbers.
These are two Savannah schools. Plenty of these kids know each other, and both football teams would really like to walk off the field Friday night feeling a whole lot better than they did coming in.
Sometimes that's enough to make a game interesting.
ISLANDS AT BRANTLEY COUNTY
Islands (3-0) at Brantley County (1-2), 7:30 p.m.
Okay, Sharks. Now it counts.
Islands takes a 3-0 road record at Brantley County in its region opener, and one thing has stood out about the Sharks' start. It hasn't been one guy doing everything.
Parker Woods has 201 rushing yards through three games, while Nathan Tulloch has added 189. Mason McLaughlin can make plays with his legs, and Jackson Tripp gives the Sharks another option out of the backfield.
Then there's Michael Cooler. Against Bryan County, Cooler caught a 54-yard touchdown pass on a fake punt and turned around on defense with five tackles and two sacks.
Different Sharks have made plays when they've needed them. That's a pretty good formula for getting to 3-0. Now comes the next question. Can they do it on the road when the region games start counting?
BEACH AT TOOMBS COUNTY
Beach (1-2) at Toombs County (3-0), 8 p.m.
Here's one where you better know what you're walking into.
Toombs County is unbeaten, and Savannah fans probably remember what the Bulldogs did at Memorial Stadium in Week 1 against Benedictine. Now Beach gets them on the road, and this one counts in the region.
For Beach, senior Jordan Newton is a name to watch. He rushed for 115 yards on only nine carries and scored three touchdowns against Groves. James Johnson and Jordan Brito have also made plays in the secondary.
This is a different test for Beach. Road game. Region game. Undefeated opponent. We'll learn a little more about the Bulldogs Friday night.
EVANS AT JENKINS
Evans (2-1) at Jenkins (0-3), 7:30 p.m., Memorial Stadium
Don't get fooled by this record, either. Jenkins is 0-3, but Richmond Hill found out firsthand that the Warriors can make you work.
If you're looking for one name, start with Tasean Rhodes. Against Richmond Hill, Rhodes returned kickoffs for 75 and 99 yards for touchdowns and added a 5-yard touchdown run. That's three touchdowns in one night against an unbeaten football team.
Jenkins had last week off, so the Warriors have had some time to regroup. Now Evans comes to Memorial Stadium and regional play begins.
At some point, though, close isn't enough. The Warriors need a win in the column. Friday would be a pretty good time to get it.
AROUND THE AREA
Five more games on the Week 5 schedule are worth watching.
Bradwell Institute at Glynn Academy: Bradwell returns after a week off and goes right into region play. The Tigers were 2-0 before running into Valdosta, and Carlito Savea is one to watch in the Bradwell running game.
Effingham County at Lakeside: The Rebels also had last week off after shutting out New Hampstead 37-0. The defense recorded eight sacks, while Matthew Dillon threw two touchdown passes. Malik Letman caught a touchdown and returned a punt 55 yards for another score.
Groves at Ware County: Groves gets a tough road trip for its region opener. Ware County is coming off a 13-7 loss to Richmond Hill, so the Gators will be looking to get back in the win column.
Windsor Forest at Bryan County: Windsor Forest had a week off after its first loss of the season. Quarterback Jayden Martin threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns against South Effingham, so Bryan County will have to account for that.
Johnson at Pierce County: Johnson also opens region play on the road. The Atom Smashers have shown they can make explosive plays, including a 45-yard touchdown run from Shamari King against Liberty County. Now they get an unbeaten Pierce County team.
THREE THINGS THE PSR IS WATCHING
First, watch the unbeaten teams. Richmond Hill is 4-0, while South Effingham and Islands are 3-0. All three have gotten there differently, and all three get another test Friday night.
Second, region football is here. A bad Friday night in August hurts, but a bad Friday night in the region can follow you all the way to November. That's why some of these games feel a little different.
And third, keep an eye on the teams that need one. Jenkins is 0-3, Savannah Country Day is 0-5, and Savannah Christian has dropped three straight. Records don't tell us everything, but sooner or later you've got to put one in the win column.

PREP SPORTS REPORT TAKE
Four weeks into the season, we're starting to learn a little something. But here's the thing about high school football. Teams change.
Kids get better. Coaches make adjustments. Somebody who wasn't making plays in August suddenly starts making them in September. That's why it's usually a good idea not to decide exactly who a football team is after one Friday night.
Richmond Hill is 4-0, but the Wildcats have had to earn a couple of those. South Effingham and Islands are unbeaten, and now they'll find out what that means when region games start showing up.
Then look at Benedictine. Remember how everybody was talking after the Cadets gave up 58 points on opening night? Two wins later, that feels like a long time ago.
On the other side, you've got Jenkins, Savannah Christian and Savannah Country Day. Those records aren't what any of them wanted, but that doesn't mean the season is over.
That's why Friday night matters. We're getting some answers, but there's still plenty of football left to give us a few surprises.
