SAVANNAH, Ga. — One of Savannah’s top high school soccer traditions is back Saturday.
The 16th Annual Coastal Empire Soccer All-Star Games return to Islands High School on Saturday, May 16, bringing together many of the top soccer players from across Southeast Georgia and the South Carolina Lowcountry for a full day of competition, recognition, and recruiting opportunities.
What started 16 years ago by Windsor Forest Athletic Director and boys soccer coach Cam Turner as a way to help local players gain more exposure has grown into one of the area’s premier soccer showcases.
“This year we had over 200 players nominated from 30 different schools,” Turner said during an appearance on the Savannah Sports Report. “The kids look forward to it every year.”
Turner said the event has continued to evolve, with recruiting in today’s college sports world changing rapidly due to NIL and the transfer portal.
“The colleges are going to stream the games, so coaches who can’t attend in person will still be able to watch online,” Turner said. “That’s how a lot of recruiting is done now.”
The event will once again feature girls' games in the morning, followed by the boys' all-star matches later in the afternoon. The girls' teams will compete in a round-robin format beginning at 10 a.m., while the boys' games begin at 1 p.m.
Players from state championship programs, Islands High School and Savannah Arts Academy, will also be recognized during the event after both schools captured GHSA boys soccer state titles this week.
“It’s a big thing for Savannah soccer and Southeast Georgia soccer,” Turner said. “I’m really proud of the way soccer in this area is now being represented.”
For many players, the showcase is about more than one final high school game.
Turner said one of his favorite parts of the event is seeing longtime rivals become teammates for one last time before graduation.
“They’ve spent four years competing against each other,” Turner said. “Now they get a chance to come back together and play like little kids again.”
The all-star games have also become an important tool for helping local players continue their soccer careers at the college level.
“It’s huge because they’re playing with other top-tier athletes,” Turner said. “If you shine in an all-star event like this, people notice.”
Over the years, the event has helped connect countless players with college opportunities throughout Georgia and the Southeast.
Turner said many former all-stars have returned years later as coaches, teachers and mentors in the Savannah soccer community.
“It’s helped a lot of kids move on,” Turner said. “That’s what makes it special.”
Fans, families, teammates and soccer supporters from around the area are expected to pack Islands Stadium again Saturday for another celebration of Savannah-area soccer.
After 16 years, the tradition continues.
