If the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) gets final approval from it's executive group in July, it is preparing to enforce tougher rules on student-athlete transfers starting August 1.
The GHSA board recently voted 11-1 in favor of these rule changes, which would require families to prove they made a real move. That means showing things like a new lease, driver’s license, and utility bills. They’ll also need to show that utilities were shut off at the old home, and the lease was canceled.
One new rule also says that if a student-athlete moves from one parent’s home to another in a different school district, both parents must be listed on the student’s birth certificate. If not, the student will not be allowed to play.
Another big change is that any athlete who transfers two times after ninth grade must sit out for a full year.
The GHSA says these rules are about keeping the game fair and ensuring student-athletes aren’t switching schools just for sports. If approved next month, the new rules will go into effect before the 2025-26 school year starts.
