Regular Season Wrapping up in Volleyball and Softball

As local volleyball and softball teams conclude their regular season play and region tournaments, several schools seek to qualify for the state playoffs. What is the schedule for this weekend? Read below.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Richmond Hill has secured the GHSA Class 6A Area 1 volleyball title for the third year, continuing its reign in the region.

 

Richmond Hill High School Volleyball Digs a Three-Peat!

 

In GHSA Class 5A, South Effingham will host the area tournament, which kicks off Friday, October 11. Effingham County will play Glynn Academy at 9 a.m., followed by South Effingham facing Evans at 10 a.m. per brackets sent to the prep SPortsReport by South Effingham Athletic Director Justin Merritt.

 

For Class 4A Area 1, New Hampstead will play Warner Robins at Ware County High School on Saturday in a critical match for playoff seedings, according to the Phoenix Head Volleyball Coach Savanna Seals. New Hampstead is currently in second place and, with a win, will secure second place and host a state playoff game for the first time in school history.

 

In Class 3A, the semifinals and finals will be held at Islands High School on Friday, October 11. At 4 p.m., Southeast Bulloch will face Islands on Court 1, while Calvary Day takes on Jenkins on Court 2, as posted on the bracket shared by Calvary Head Volleyball Coach Brooke Cameron. The winners will play for the championship at 6 p.m., and the losing teams will compete in a consolation match.

 

Savannah Arts Academy will host GHSA Class 2A volleyball action at Woodville Tompkins on Saturday, October 12. The Arts Academy Head Volleyball Coach, Lauren Lord, shared the bracket. The quarterfinals start at 11 a.m. with Crisp County playing Tattnall County, followed by Appling County versus Cook County at 1 p.m. Savannah Arts starts to play in the semifinals and will take on the winner of Crisp County versus Tattnall. Pierce County will play the winner of Appling versus Cook. Winners will play for the championship at 3 p.m.

 

In GHSA Class A 3A-Division I, Savannah Christian clinched the title after defeating St. Vincent's in straight sets: 25-14, 25-21, 25-21. Savannah Country Day took third place by beating Toombs County in three sets. Results were posted on each school's social media pages.

 

The first round of the Georgia Association of Parochial and Private Schools (GAPPS) state volleyball tournament was played on Tuesday. As posted on the school's "X" page, the Habersham School hosted and defeated Peachtree Christian 3-0. The Patriots advance to the quarterfinals of the GAPPS D1 A state tournament.

 

SOFTBALL

Richmond Hill High School's softball team, competing in GHSA Class 6A Region 1, did not participate in a region tournament, according to Wildcat Head Coach Chris Jenkins. Playoff births for the region were based on region play. The Wildcats finished in second place and will host a state playoff game vs. Walton County High School on Wednesday.

 

The GHSA Class 5A tournament is at Effingham County High School. Effingham County plays Glynn Academy at 11 a.m., followed by South Effingham versus Greenbrier at 1 p.m., according to South Effingham. Athletic Director Justin Merritt. As the tournament progresses, additional games will follow at 3 and 5 p.m.

 

Southeast Bulloch, Calvary Day School, and Long County have secured the first, second, and third seeds in GHSA Class 3A Region 3. Islands High School Head Coach Brandon Collins acknowledged that the Sharks and Liberty County still have a shot at the fourth seed. Islands High School has to win one of the two regular-season games left, whereas Liberty County has to win its final two games. Liberty hosts Islands at 5:30 p.m. today.

 

Savannah Christian and St. Vincent's Academy play in GHSA 1A D-I Region 3. Per St.Vincent's Academy Karl DeMasi, Savannah Christian is in third place, and St. Vincent's has made the state playoffs based on the new point system that qualifies teams for the state playoffs.

 

Local teams are trying hard to secure playoff berths and keep their season alive. This weekend will decide who advances to the state championships and who wins regional titles.
