The Richmond Hill High School Runnin' Wildcats boys and girls cross country teams took first place at Wayne County High School Meet #1 Cross Country meet on August 18, 2002, in Jesup, Georgia.
"This year, the team is young and big. We have 41 new runners and 15 returning. We have seen this coming, but it is a whole new teaching approach this year: a fun new challenge and a great way to fine-tune the culture," said Head Coach Levi Sybert. "We have to be humble to establish new appropriate goals that are right for the group and program." As you can see by the results below, five freshmen and two sophomores placed in the meet to help the Wildcats finish first.
Five Wildcat boys finished in the top thirty finishers of the varsity boy's 5,000-meter race, with junior Noah Sybert (17:14.08) placing third, freshman Carter Dietrich (17:56.46) finishing 7th, senior Benjamin Spiker (18:48.40) 17th, freshman Noah Bowman (19:24.62) 25th, and sophomore Benjamin Hall (19:25.08) 27th.
That gave Richmond Hill first place with a team total of 80 points, 21 points better, then runner-up Southeast Bulloch (101) and 29 points over third-place finisher Brunswick. Other local teams in the top ten were Benedictine in 4th, South Effingham in 6th, and HV Jenkins in 10th.
On the girl's trail, the Lady Wildcats had five amazing top runners in the top 10 finishers for the meet's first-place team trophy. Junior Julia Wison (20:01.81) placed second overall, and two freshmen placed 3rd and 4th. Iris Turner (20:01.81) took third, and Jolee Mitchell (20:59.24) took 4th. Then rounding out the top ten, another freshman in 7th place, Adeline Althen (22:08.08) and sophomore Alannah Bowling (22:18.40), crossed the finish line 8th. As a team, the Richmond girls took first place by 51 points as South Effingham finished second with 90 points.
Sybert said, "The first meet was a splendid way to establish a solid start for these young runners high school running careers. We are very, very pleased and excited to see what level of growth is going to happen this year." It was an excellent outcome for a program working with its large numbers and new members' needs. Win, and they will come, as you can see with the Richmond Hill High School Runnin' Wildcats program!
