Savannah Christian quarterback Spencer Robicheaux had a career night at Pooler Stadium on his birthday in a 54-14 win for the Raiders over visiting Valwood.

Robicheaux turned 18 on Friday, Sept. 18 and the senior leader celebrated in style, completing 17 of 21 passes  for 351 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for another score.

Each team juggled good plays with bad errors in the opening quarter, and neither took firm control out of the gates.

Robicheaux wasted no time getting his party started on the opening drive of the contest. He connected with junior receiver George Futch on an 11-yard corner route to cap an impressive initial drive for Head Coach Baker Woodward and SCPS.

The Raiders (3-0) never trailed, but the GISA Class 3A Valiants (1-2) answered the SCPS opening score with a touchdown of their own. Senior quarterback Pate Hogan faked a handoff to his setback and kept for a 26-yard rushing score right up the gut to make it 7-7 after one quarter.

From there, it was all Raiders.

The Savannah Christian defense forced five Valwood turnovers and was led all night by junior defensive end Caleb Womble’s eight tackles (four TFL) and three sacks. Blake Brown, Cameron Powell and David Bucey each intercepted Hogan, who has college offers from LaGrange and Shorter among others.

Futch had three touchdowns and hauled in six catches for 140 yards while sophomore Ely Brown added four receptions for 97 yards and a score. Robicheaux ended the game completing his final 11 passes and has 704 yards passing (35 of 50) and nine touchdowns (one interception) through three games.

“It’s a lot of fun calling plays for these guys,” Woodward said of Brown, Futch and other offensive weapons like Jayden Hester and Carter Allen.

“We’ve got a lot of options on that side of the ball and it’s a lot for opposing teams to deal with.”

Woodward has a record of 22-6 through his first 28 games as coach of the Raiders. He played quarterback at Calvary before coaching the position at Bethesda and BC, says Robicheaux stacks up with any quarterback he’s ever been around.

Currently, Robicheaux has just one college scholarship offer — NAIA school Reinhardt.

After Friday, the new 18-year-old may just have more coming his way.

“I’ve been trying to make a point,” Woodward said of his quarterback’s tendency to be overlooked when the area’s best QB’s are discussed. “I’ve been around quarterbacks a long time. It’s all I know.

“We’ve had some good (quarterbacks) when I was at BC and other places. Spencer is the best one I’ve ever coached.”

The Raiders will host GISA powerhouse John Milledge Academy next Friday (9/25) at 7:30 in Pooler.
