The best in the sport of competitive cheer will be displayed this Friday and Saturday, November 10th and 11th, 2023, at the Georgia High School Association Competitive Cheerleading State Championships at the Macon Centreplex in Macon, Georgia.

Three GHSA region champions from the Savannah Area, Savannah Christian Preparatory School (Class 3A-Region 3), South Effingham High School (GHSA 6a - Region 2), and Richmond Hill High School (GHSA Claas 7A- Region 1), will be on stage. A top 16 qualifier from the GHSA sectionals last weekend, Effingham County High School will also represent the Savannah area at states. The top 16 scores by teams automatically make it to states from sectional competition results.

Savannah Christian is the defending state champion in GHSA Class AAA and is looking to repeat. SCPS competitive cheerleading squad has yet to lose an event all year. Last year, the Raiders won their first-ever state competitive cheerleading championship.

The Raiders head Coach Charita Bowers said, “If God willing, we would love to go back-to-back. We are working on cleaning up little things that will give us a shot at winning the championship again.”

Each squad must perform its routine in 2 minutes and 30 seconds on a 42-by-42-foot surface. All routines must include both cheer and dance. The routines should be made up of tumbling skills permitted only within the body of the routine, and tumbling skills may not be performed as a part of the entrance to or exit from the competitive area. And Pom Poms are the only props allowed in a competitive routine.

All Savannah area local cheer squads will compete on Saturday, November 11, 2023. Savannah Christian will cheer in the morning in the second session starting at 10 a.m. South Effingham and Effingham will be in Session 1 of the afternoon competition beginning at 3 p.m. Richmond Hill also will be in the afternoon session but in Session 2.

The GHSA will award the champion and runner-up with trophies in each classification this Saturday.
