Richmond Hill, GA — For the first time ever, Richmond Hill High School has a Georgia Cheerleading Coaches Association (GCCA) Cheerleader of the Year—and her name is Catherine DiMarzio.

The senior earned the 2025 4–6A Cheerleader of the Year title back in August  at Columbus State University, following a standout performance in both the routine and interview portions of the GCCA All-State event. Not only was DiMarzio the first RHHS cheerleader to make it to the final round, but she left as the overall winner.

A Moment That Meant Everything

The award was more than just a personal win—it was a major milestone for the entire Richmond Hill cheer program. DiMarzio had never expected to win, and Coach Yontz emphasized how the experience itself was already a victory.

“This was the first time any of our athletes had made it to the performance and interview round,” said Yontz. “So we already felt like we’d won just being there. Catherine told me she just wanted to make the All-State Team—and when her name was called for the Top 16, we were all so proud.”

But it was the final announcement that created a moment Coach Yontz will never forget.

“Seeing the shock on her face when they named her Cheerleader of the Year will stay with me for years,” she said. “Not because she wasn’t completely deserving—but because her humility never allowed her to expect it. That’s the true definition of a champion mindset.”

A Leader On and Off the Mat

Catherine is known at RHHS for her elite skills—she competes two of the hardest tumbling passes on the team: a two to full and a whip through to full. She’s also a powerful base, helping lift and stabilize her team’s stunts. But Coach Yontz says it’s her personality and leadership that make her truly exceptional.

“While her skills shine, it's her work ethic, attitude, and passion that truly set her apart. She embodies the very best of cheerleading: strength, spirit, and the unwavering drive to be her best for her team.”

Growth That Spans Seven Years

DiMarzio is part of a senior class of 11 cheerleaders, most of whom have been cheering together since middle school—and some even earlier. For Coach Yontz, the bond runs deep. She has coached Catherine for seven consecutive years, starting at Richmond Hill Middle School before moving to the high school.

“It has been beyond rewarding to see her develop confidence, character, and leadership right before my eyes. To watch her become someone who not only excels in competition, but also inspires and uplifts those around her, is the kind of joy that makes coaching so meaningful.”

She added, “This is an extremely special group as the majority of them have cheered together since they were in middle school and some even before then!”

A Team-Driven Victory

Behind every standout athlete is a group that believes in them. DiMarzio’s stunt group—Katherine Bezner, Paityn Winchester, and Jett Taylor—played a major role in her preparation. They met weekly to refine her routine, stayed late at practices, and even traveled with her at 4 a.m. after cheering a Friday night football game to arrive in Columbus in time for the Saturday event.

“Their support and encouragement were unwavering throughout the entire process, and they treated the scholarship with the same respect and diligence as if they were the applicants,” said Yontz.

A Champion’s Character Beyond the Mat

Catherine’s impact goes beyond athletic performance—it’s her steady perspective and emotional maturity that truly elevate her as a leader. As Coach Yontz reflected, “As all coaches know, each season is bound to come with its fair share of difficulties. On more than one occasion after a rough practice, competition, or game, Catherine has reached out and let me know how much she appreciates me as a coach.” That kind of emotional intelligence is rare in a high school athlete. “She has the rare ability to see beyond the moment,” Yontz said. “While her teammates and even myself, as her coach, might dwell on mistakes, she keeps a wider perspective—recognizing that every setback is just part of a larger journey. Her maturity is well beyond her years and continues to inspire me and our entire coaching staff every day.”

With DiMarzio making history for Richmond Hill High School cheerleading, the impact of her win will go far beyond one season. Her dedication, humility, and team-first mindset will inspire the next wave of Wildcats. And for Coach Yontz, this unforgettable milestone marks a moment seven years in the making.
