COLUMBUS, GA — Savannah Christian Preparatory School seniors Milissa  Maxwell and Bailey Buttrey made program history last weekend, claiming the Champion and Runner-Up titles, respectively, at the Georgia Cheerleading Coaches Association (GCCA) All-State event for Class A-3A. It marks the second time in three years a Raider has earned the top statewide honor, reinforcing the rise of SCPS as a force in competitive cheer.

Maxwell captured the overall All-State Champion title, following in the footsteps of 2022 winner Jayden Singleton, while Buttrey—her longtime teammate and close friend—secured the Runner-Up distinction. Both athletes have been in the Raider cheer program since middle school, displaying years of growth and leadership. Their routines in Columbus were nearly flawless, checking every competitive box, from tumbling and stunts to interviews and essays.

“These girls have wanted this since middle school,” said head coach Charita Bowers, now in her 15th season. “They executed what we call a hit zero—nothing dropped, every move was clean. I’m beyond proud.”

The journey to All-State status required more than physical skill. Each nominee had to complete a comprehensive application, community recommendations, a personal essay, and a full competition routine—all while balancing a packed academic and extracurricular load. Both Maxwell and Buttrey are dual-enrollment students eyeing collegiate cheer programs, including the University of Georgia, where Singleton now competes.

Maxwell, known for her calm demeanor and powerful tumbling, stood out as a complete student-athlete. Buttrey’s story is one of resilience: once removed from the mat as a freshman, she fought her way back to become a team captain and top-tier performer. “Being pulled pushed her to become the athlete and leader she is today,” said Bowers.

“What sets them apart is their mindset,” Coach Bowers added. “They’re not just trying to be good athletes—they’re working to be great people, great students, and great teammates.”

With both seniors serving as captains for the 2025 varsity competition team, their example has already ignited the rest of the squad. “It shows our program is consistent and can compete with the best in the state,” Bowers added.

“I tell the girls all the time—hard work pays off. Milissia and Bailey are proof of that,” Coach Bowers said. “They’re not just respected. They’re trusted by their teammates, and that’s what leadership really is.”

Savannah Christian now looks ahead to the GHSA competition season with momentum. With proven leadership and statewide recognition, the Raiders are poised to make even more noise in the months to come.
