Senior star receiver George Futch took the first play of the second quarter 39 yards on a jet sweep for a touchdown giving Savannah Christian a 14-0 advantage and the Raiders rolled to a 42-0 victory over visiting Deerfield-Windsor in the Raiders’ home opener at Pooler Stadium on Friday, September 17.
SCPS (2-2) outscored Deerfield-Windsor 28-0 in the second quarter of the non-region affair.
Futch hauled in a 38-yard touchdown catch on a beautiful pass from Paulus Zittrauer late in the second quarter for his fifth receiving touchdown of the campaign. It was the junior quarterback’s sixth passing TD of the year.
In the first, Zittrauer was picked off by the Knights, but the SCPS defense held on fourth down near midfield to return the ball back to its offense. Defensively, the Raiders were led by excellent performances from Peyton Cromwell and David Bucey among others.
Bucey’s pick six in the second quarter made it 20-0, SCPS. Freshman defensive end Elijah Griffin had five tackles (two for loss) in the opening half. Carter Allen’s two rushing touchdowns in the first half paced the Raiders early on in the blowout victory.
A running clock in the second half was mainly featuring SCPS backups playing in front of the home crowd.
